I found through a cached google page we had kn8 users who had this problem I was wondering if those who have the board can help me out.

Specs:

-AMD Opteron 165
-ABIT KN8 SLI
-eVGA Geforce 7900GT CO 256MB
-Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel
-ANTEC TPII 550W Power Supply

I just bought this motherboard the the SLI led is green while the 5VSB (led 1) is red. That is the one on the bottom of the board by the The Front Panel (Pwr, HDD LED, etc..) connectors.

So I get a red led when the Powersupply is plugged in. When I start the power the VCC (led 2) is green and then a second later the computer powers off though the 5VSB led remains red. I cannot even get to the bios screen, it just turns on then off.

I tried using the additional 12V connector but it didn't help. I also tried resetting the CMOS and had no luck. I also tried reseating the 2x2 pin with no luck. If I take out the 2x2 pin the board will run longer and won't shut off though I turned if off soon after as the led 1 for the 5VSB was still red and I didn't want to damage the board.

I am not sure if the board is shorting out as I forgot to check before putting it in my case. Or maybe one of my leads from the power or reset are in backwards (not sure if this would cause the problem).

I'd hate to RMA the board as it took forever to get everything setup as I have a custom WC system in place and it'd be a pain to get the board out. Any help is appriciated! If it works I'll post pics of my PC somewhere on anantech's forums!!!!

The 5VSB LED is meant to be red & the fact that it is does not signify a problem.

You have water cooling & you have cleared CMOS thereby resetting to defaults.
By default the board should be looking for a fan rpm on the CPUFan header which yours won't have. Try connecting an rpm signalling fan to the CPUFan header - once in the BIOS you can disable the shutdown on low CPU fan rpm.

Thanks I'll go and do that.

I tried doing that and I have the same problem. The board powers up for a second then powers down. I tried using my powersupply in my 1.33ghz thunderbird rig though it uses a 20 pin and doens't use a 2x2 pin so I can't rule out that the powersupply is bad, though the voltages all seemed fine for me when it was used on my old rig.

Any other ideas? Also how would I know if my motherboard is shorting out?

re. shorting out - try an out of the case install.
If it works out of the case but doesn't in it then you probably have a short.
The KN8 has 2 holes on the PCB (1 bottom right corner & 1 by the RAM slots) that do not have metal rings around them & you shouldn't put a screw into those unless you use a washer.

There seems to have been a notable increase in dead/dying Antecs of late so it's always a possibility.
It's not just voltages that are important these days but Amperages too.
Your Antec if 100% should be fine but if it is failing it is possible for it to be able to power a less demanding type of board but not yours or similar.

I am having the same exact problem. Infact, I thought it was the psu, so I just replace the antec sp that came in the sonatat with the neoh 500. Still nothing. I think I am going to try an out of case install and the start over, if that doesnt work then the board goes back. Also, remember that if this is the sli version, and you are not using sli, you must use the phantom card or it will not boot. As an aside, the new psu does seem to turn on when plugged in. Yes I checked the swich. Is there anything i must do for this psu to turn it on? do all of the modulalr cables have to installed?

you need to have both the main ATX & the ATX12V1 plugged into the board.
Checking for a short with an out of the case install is good - remember that if the holes don't have a metal ring don't put a screw in it (iirc there are 2 on a KN8 that shouldn't get a screw) unless you use a washer.

best place for help is the abit-USA forum.
