I am planing in buynig a new motherboard one Abit KG7-Raid or Abit KR7-Raid, the second one costs U$ 50,00 more than the first one, is this diference worth?
The difference between the KG7 and the KR7A is the chipset. The KG7 uses the the amd760 northbridge and the via686b southbridge while the KR7A uses the via kt266a chipset. The kt266a chipset is superior in benchmarks and is just as stable as the 760/686b combo. You can get both boards with or without raid. I just checked the prices online for the KG7-Raid and is 132 without shipping while the KR7A-Raid is 155 without shipping. So the difference in price is only 23 dollars as far as I can see. If you go to Abit's website, you can see that the KG7 has 3 versions while the KR7A only sells with Raid. I would have gotten the KR7A-Raid because the chipset is better and you can get better performance out of it... and if my g/f didn't need a computer as soon as she did. I settled with the KG7-Raid and do not have single problem with it. But I would get the KR7A in a heartbeat. You can check the prices at pricewatch. Good luck and happy hunting.
The only problem is that I live in Brazil, and a KG7-Raid is US$ 218.00 and a KR7-Raid is US$ 270.00. I already have 4 sticks of DDR 266 128MB and a XP 1600+.
