ABIT KG7 and Athlon 2400+

I recently upgraded my processor on my ABIT KG7 motherboard. Due to the information posted in this thread: Abit Forums I chose the Athlon XP 2400+.

Unfortunately, Now I am having random lockups. Windows XP recognizes it correctly as a 2400+ and when you boot the system the Bios shows it correctly as an Athlon Xp at 2.00 GHz, so from that I think that the board is working correctly..but I am still getting lockups.

It mostly happens when I put any kind of load on the system, like playing Planetside or Everquest.

I am running a 325W power supply. 2400+ chip, gone back to my old GeForce 3 TI200 vid card, have 2 hard drives (20 and 30Gb) and a CD-Rom and a CD-Burner. Is it possible that I am having power supply issues?

I also bought a new vid card at the same time as the chip...but took it out as a troubleshooting method..but do you think the above configuration with a GeForce 4 TI4800se would be too much load on that power supply?

I do not think that it is a heat issue either. I have been monitoring the processor and case temps and the chip is usually around 50C and the case is 38C or there abouts.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks

yeah, that KG7 was a dinosaur before it was launched--an AMD 760 chipset motherboard is NOT a good complement for a AthlonXP chip. don't buy a new video card, buy a new mobo and put your old one out to pasture on ebay.

yeah...was hoping to avoid having to buy a new board, but that is what I am leaning towards now.

Anyone else have any other input or suggestions?

Thanks

Hey! don't know if you got another MB yet but I can tell you this much, I have a KG7 with a xp2100+ running and I had the same problem
as you untill I changed my heatsink and fan to drop the temp from 50C to 36C - 40C.
I also changed the "Control CPU P/N Value to 4,04,0D" the max slew rate 7.
If "Super bypass '0' set to '1' ".
AGP 1 WS Write -enable
WS Read -disable

DriveStrength to FF -Max
Apeture to 128Mb

Try if you like.

I have a 1700xp chip overclocked to 2000xp and having no problems what so ever. I have a 300W psu and a GF2. Although the motherboard if very old, I've found it to be very stable. Try swapping out some of your components like your video card and see if it stops locking up.

What processors does my motherboard support?

Your motherboard supports the following AMD Socket A processors:

All Duron processors
All Athlon "Thunderbird" processors with 100MHz and 133MHz FSB
AthlonXP processors up to and including 2000+ (but no higher)
