Building this system for my mother in law. The motherboard is a brand new one (RMA'd one that failed). My problem is that under either Windows XP or 2000, using the latest video card drivers results in a very unstable system-locks up within a minute or so. Seems ok with earlier drivers.

I'm using this card in another system (ESC K7S5A/Duron 950/Win XP) with the latest drivers and it runs like a champ, so I'm suspecting some sort of conflict between the video card and this (older) motherboard.

Anyone have any words of wisdom before I reformat and plung back into this yet again?

The cpu is a Classic Athlon 750, two sticks of good Mushkin/Cruicial memory (192 MB total I think).

There shouldn't be a problem with the hardware, there were tons and tons of people running KA7+GF2 combos 1.5-2 years ago. Mine had no issues, though I was running under Win9X at the time. Exactly which "newer" drivers are you having trouble with? Certain ones will cause the now common infinite loop problem, though I'm not exactly sure which hardware/OS combinations can be affected by it, I was thinking it was only happening in XP...can anyone with 2K comment? I also had horrid problems with the 27.10s, though it wasn't the infinite loop, just insanely frequent lockups. I've settled into the 27.20's now and they have XP back to being solid as a rock, not a single crash of any kind in 2 weeks.

Worst case senario, you said you were building it for your mother in law and you said the earlier drivers were stable....I'm sure there are a few, but I don't know of any mother-in-laws who play much Quake 3, and if she does I'm not sure she'd notice too much performance difference in the latest drivers versus a slightly older one. ;)

Good luck,

Oh, one more thing to try maybe...Disable fast writes in the bios, using certain drivers they would cause instability in 3D apps for me on the KA7, but only 3D stuff, not general windows usage. Also try setting AGP to 2X instead of 4X as a last resort.

YBS1: Thanks for the info. The "newer" drivers I referred to were version 23.11 (released 12/3/01) from Nvidia's site and whatever driver comes from the Windows update page (never got it stable after installing to see what that was).

Good points about the bios. Right now its set to AGP 4, I dimly recall the KA7 had some problems with anything over AGP 2. I didn't have a GeForce card when I was using the predecessor of this board.

And yes, she doesn't play Quake-more of a Snood fan, but the visiting grandkids like their gaming.

I wouldn't doubt the 23.11s being the problem at all, they were a mess on my system (inf loop). I only stuck with them as long as I did because Medal of Honor seemed to run smoother with them than the others I had tried. Give the 27.20s a try, or maybe even 27.10s (they were poor for me but quite a few on this board prefer them to anything else and they seem to have fixed the infinite loop issue for most). Good luck finding the 27.20s though, I was going to link you but the links I had were down when I tried just now.

Edit....Um, Here seems to be one.
