heres the situation:
ive had this slot a board for almost 7 months now and have loved it but about three weeks ago, i restarted my computer and received a "Cannot load operating system" error. I have reformatted my maxtor 40 gig HD(udma 66) that was in the system to NTFS and FAT32, many times (quick and full) and haven't been able to install win98 or winxp pro. (It lets me format and copy all the setup files to the HD but then restarts and gives me this error.) Prior to receiving this error message -when the system was working, i had problems with my zip drive and cd burner not working correctly.

heres what i tried:
I went out and bought a new western digital 40 gig harddrive (ata100) thinking my HD went bad, but received the very same message. I asked my friends and they thought that my IDE controller on the board went bad, so i went out and bought an IDE ata 100 controller card and still got the same error message. All out of ideas, i tried an old 5.7 gig HD i had laying around and it worked PERFECTLY!!

my questions:
how do i tell if the IDE on the mobo has gone bad? is there any way to fix it? why would it not work on the newer hard drives, but work on the old one?

thanks for your help!!
