Abit IP35 Pro - PCI cards cause system to hang

Hi I'm having a problem with my IP35 Pro whenever I try to install anything in a PCI slot. So far I've tried installing a PCI IDE controller card, and a PCI wifi card.

The IDE controller card is a Highpoint Rocket133 IDE controller. After plugging it into the PCI slot, the computer would boot into windows normally and detect the card just fine. I would go to install the drivers and everything would procede normally; the computer would then ask me to restart. During the restart, the computer would boot up to the black screen with the Windows XP logo and just hang there forever. After removing the IDE controller card from the computer, the system booted up and everything worked normally.

The wifi card is a D-link DWL-G520. After plugging it in, it was fine just like the IDE card up until the driver installation. During the driver installation, the computer completely locked up and forced me to do a hard restart. During the restart, the computer once again got to the black Windows XP logo screen and froze there again, and would not boot up until I removed the PCI wifi card from the system. Once the card was removed everything booted up and functioned as normal.

My PC components:
Abit IP35 Pro
Intel Core2 Duo E6850
2GB Corsair Ballistix 4-4-4-12 RAM
EVGA 640MB Geforce 8800 GTS
2X PATA 120GB HD
1X SATA DVD-RW
750W OCZ PSU

Anyone have any ideas what my problem can be? Just one thing to note, my RAM is rated at 2.2V, but I currently have it running at 1.9V. I tested it with memtest and 10 hours+ prime95 torture test at 1.9V without any errors, but let me know if you think there are some problems here. I have the latest version of the motherboard BIOS flashed (Version 11). Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you have a driver conflict with windows. Unzip the Airplus utility and direct windows to install only from the drivers folder. DO NOT install the whole DLink software. Are you running Vista?

Did you wiped the HDD and clean installed windows?

I am running windows XP, and this is a brand new system with a clean install of windows. I will try your suggestion when I get home later tonight, thanks for the help.

that D-link card is famous. you HAVE to install the driver first otherwise it will give you all kinds of problems.

oh wow seriously? I downloaded the latest drivers from the d-link website, should I just run the setup.exe program to install before plugging the card in?

yep. I have the MIMO version 520M
I recall my card even has a yellow warning sticker on the package, stating that driver has to be installed first

install driver, reboot, shutdown, install pci, cold start
I did it twice on my two rigs, and never had any problem

I read it somewhere people are complaining the card due to incorrect installation order. I don't want to play risky 😛

I use another strategy. Put in the card. Cancel installation at the prompt. Go into Device Manager and direct windows to install the drivers from the software folder.

I'm using the Abit PCI-E 1x WiFi card with a small wired antenna. Better signal strength. Unit was FREE after $20 rebate.
