The fan on my northbridge on my IC7 has begun to make an awful lot of noise. I found a place selling the stock cooler but they are out of stock. Is there any place that may sell this, or even better a passive cooler for this board? I have an old pentium 3 passive cooler sitting here, would it be possible to use that? TIA

Zalman has a decent one that you can find here. I'm sure you can find other cheaper passive cooling heatsinks on this site. They have quite a decent selection of cooling.

I stumbled to that site just before you posted :) do you think that would work on my IC7? When I pulled the stock one off it looks kind of like an athlon processor, it has a core that sticks up higher than the bulk of the chip. Do you think the epoxy would hold it onto the northbridge? The IC& doesnt have holes in the board to hold the stock one on, it has hooks that the stock one clips into. Thanks.

Which heatsink do you have on your NB? If it's this one, then just unplug the fan and you'll be good to go. If you have the older short, squat one then you'll have to get something else. I'd get something passive so you don't have another fan that can die on you.

It doesn't look like the PHS have hooks to hook onto the retention. I guess you could try the epoxy.

B4 you go and VOID your Warranty, you might try blowing out all the dust and adding a drop of 3-in-1 oil under the fan's label . . . ;)

it worked for me :)
(it looks like a b!tch replacing that fan, anyway*) :p

edit: * ah, i see you already took the fan out . . . i guess i am lazy . . . but the oil worked . . . iit's been almost 3 months and it's is still quiet (and it was SCREAMING). ;)

the heatsink was easy to get off, just 2 hooks, and it was a little sticky from the thermal compound but it came right off....now the fan, getting it off was ok, but trying to put it back on wasnt fun at all. I did oil it with some oil I found here at work, so maybe that will help it, it seemed to help at first but then when I was ready to pack it all up and take it home it started to make a little bit of noise again. So I guess I'll wait and see if it gets worse, just kinda wanted to find some options incase it would totally die so I wouldnt be without it for very long.

that's what i thought . . . easy off . . . not so easy, on. :D

removing all the dust really helped . . . i guess it ws also unbalanced . . . i also oiled it a COUPLE of times (it squealed after the first oiling, also) . . . if it can make it till February (and out of warranty) i'll replace it . . . about the same time, i'll probably upgrade my 2.80c (at 3.31Ghz) with the last of the NWs - 3.4C with the hope of hitting 4+ Ghz . . ..

good luck!

Yeah, I was running mine at 220FSB with the fan unplugged without a problem. Asus, Intel and others have only passive heatsinks on their boards, and they're pretty solid across the board so I wouldn't hesitate to try unplugging the fan.

Those metal retaining clips are very prone to popping loose from the motherboard, and then landing on some circuitry (such as the video card) and shorting out something.
So, it's probably best to just use epoxy and a passive heat sink. Zalman has a good passive heat sink, which includes the epoxy.

The mounting pins came off of my IC7 too and the fan that was on there was very loud. I soldered the pins back on - you need to push the pin through to the back side and then put a blob of solder on it. I also got this Zalman heatsink., and after breaking off the corner 'fins', I was able to use the original fan mounting brace and hook it up to the pins.
