Hi,
I bought a new Altec Lansing 251 - 5.1 speaker set and hooked up to my system with Abit IC7-G mobo (Onboard sound). But for some reason my rear speakers are not working. I am not getting any sound from them at all. The rest of the speakers sound great. I have loaded the latest drivers from Abit site. I even loaded the latest drivers from the Realtek website. Tried different settings in the software. Anyone having the same problem or found a solution for this problem please help.:brokenheart:

Are you playing something that is already 5.1? The onboard sound you have does not do realtime 5.1 encoding (the only chipset to do that is nVidia's Soundstorm on the MCP-T chip). The chipset you have will output 5.1 if you're playing something back from a 5.1 source, otherwise it will just be normal. HTH.

What is a 5.1 source.? I was testing speakers with the sound card speaker configuration utility from Abit. I don't hear anything from the 2 rear speakers. All the other speakers like center, Subwoofer, Front left and right are working fine. When I test for rear, I get sound from my front speakers. I am using onboard sound and my manual says it supports 5.1 sound . Am I missing something here or do I need to do something in the Bios? Thanks

Is your computer aware that it has 5.1 speakers attached? If not it may be outputting 2 or 3 channel sound (not sure what would happen, to be honest, if it thinks it has stero speakers attached). Try a 5.1 dvd, and see if it gets sound to all 5 speakers; is it possible the utility assumes you are using 6-channel analog connections?

Ok, now that's making a little more sense. Like 3chordcharlie said, you might not have the correct speaker configuration enabled. I thought you meant you were playing music, etc. and not getting 5.1 sound.

I checked every option avalable to change the speaker config. Control panel - audio-speakers. Changed it on the speaker config thingy from the Abit driver. Set my sub woofer switch to 6 ch. I played a few DVDs with 5.1 sound But I don't here anything from my rear speakers.

SOLVED: Finally.
Here is what I did.
Disabled the onboard audio in bios. Put my old predator 5.1 PCI audio card and used it for about 3-4 hours. Decided to give one more shot at onboard audio.
Uninstalled drivers for predator and pulled the card out. Enabled onboard realtek audio in bios again. Started system Installed the drivers from Realtek site - version 3.62. Tada everything started working. Set to 5.1 speakers in controlpanel audio speakers. Set to 6 channel speakers in Sound effect tool. NOw my 5.1 speakers work like charm. Gettting crisp clean sound in all the speaker including once problematic real speakers. Thanks everyone for your help.
