ABIT? Did I choose the wrong board?

My new KT7A won't post. I'm using a 1gig CPU, ATI 64mb RADEON and all I get is fresh air from the fans blowing, nothing else. No video, no beeps, just spinning fans. I have fan 1 header in use, no grounds(tried booting out of case), tried 2 different memory modules, 2 different video cards, re-seated the CPU and cleared the CMOS. My power supply is 300w and came with my Enlight case.

I'm lost! Does anyone know what this could be?

ummm... good question- i just seen another thread where someone had the same problem- he tried a different cpu, different ram, put it in a different case cuz he thought it was the ps, but he thinks his board is dead- your's might be, too, and it's happened to me before, although not with the kt7. the thread i just read, though- he had the new kt7a. also- don't know if you heard but abit has been removed from AMD's "recommended" mobo list....

reassuring, eh?

Do you have the fan on your heatsink plugged into the CPU fan 1 header? It must be a 3 wire RPM monitoring fan. The CPU 1 fan header is the 2nd one closest to the DIMM slot on rhe top of the board. With the shipping BIOS a RPM monitoring fan must be connected there in order for the system to boot, or it will start briefly, and shut down.

Also make sure that your heatsink is making good contact with the processor. What type of HSF are you using?

you may have gotten a bad board. I had a brand new Tyan board do that when I got it. It's not an Abit problem (I have had nothing but good luck with Abit boards).

Hope you have good luck with the board. I am willing to believe it is bad, if you have the fan plugged into the correct port.

chances are either a bad board or u didnt plug the header with a fan which results in no post but from what i know its suppose to start then power down after 5 secs if no fans are connected via fan header cause it happened to me

new bios fixes it :)

I've seen these symptoms be a power supply problem, you might wanna check that.

I had the exact same problem with a vp6, tried different power supplies, different RAM, swapping chips, video cards, everything. Never did get it solved. I just traded it in for an MSI 694D.

From what I hear, Abit QC has really gone to hell recently, oems are returning quite a few boards, and a few dealers are refusing to carry them because of the problems.

I have a GlobalWin FOP 32 HSF and it is plugged into fan header 1. I talked to ABIT and they have narrowed it down to what they feel is a bad board or CPU.

Yes, you have a bad board or your cpu is dead. If your cpu is working, and you did not put the heatsink fan in the CPU header 1, it will give you the beep. Check your CPU pin, did any of them get bend. I believe the problem is the CPU

I know we all get a rush out of doing it ourselves, but I have to say the best motherboard combo deal I've seen in a while is over at Monarch Computers website. Their prices are competitive with the best prices on pricewatch, and their technicians put the cpu, board, and heatsink together and test it before they send it to you.

Like I said, I know we all like doing it ourselves, but man, for the same price as the hardware cost by itself it would be pretty nice to know that when the fedex truck rolls up you're not going to get a doa like that. Besides, once I get mine out of the box I'm going to take the heatsink off, pull the processor out and unlock it, and then put goop between the cpu and processor:) So I've really done it all myself anyway, but I don't have to worry so much about an rma. Good luck man.
