Abit Bx6 2.0 CPU Upgrade Options?

I currently have a p3450@527

What are my options for upgrading?

I know officially ABIT supports only p3 700, and the celeron 600 I believe.


Can I get a celeron 900 and use a slotket?

But does anyone know how high I can go and still have a stable system? I'm going for stability and performance gain.

What should I do?
 
Hi, I have the same board with a cCO P31000eb, running at 138x7.5=1036. My voltage is 1.70, (default)temps are 26c idle, 44c max. under full load. It runs everything fine at 143x7.5=1074, except Prime95. It gives me divide errors after about an hour. Be careful which vid card you choose if you use high bus speeds.(there is no 1/2 divider with the "BX" chipset)I have a Leadtek GeForce2 Pro, it does very well at these speeds. Pay special attention to your heatsink choice also. I have a slot one CPU, and I use an Alpha P3125. I hope your results are as good, or better than mine.

I own a BX6r2. I ran a C533A at 825 (103x8 @ 1.6v) and 897 (112x8 @ 1.85v). I now run a P!!!700 at 933 (133x7 @ 1.75v). You should be able to run any 66/100MHz C2 or 100/133MHz P!!!, provided your AGP card and RAM can handle it, and OC further as your components allow. Flash to latest BIOS (I forget what it is).
 

I believe the latest bios is QR. It allows you to reach 153 fsb and multipliers up to 8.5 I believe, but I may be low on the multipliers.

Fine board, I think. I run a 750e at 1000, Prime95 stable. It runs 138 stable also, if cool, but too much summer heat and it gives too much trouble. The 1073 (143fsb) is for show only on my machine. I just enjoy the cheap gig. A few more fsb's would probably be nice, but the status quo is nice.

P3's only come in slot 1, and getting a p3 750 and oc'ing it wouldn't be too bad an idea, it'll be faster than a celeron for sure
 
I have had a BX6 rev 2.0 for over 2 years now running flawlessly with a PIII 450 until today. I think the board is fried. It shut off at some time during the day and didn't do anything when I hit the power to turn it back on. So I cleared the CMOS and that got it power again but it does nothing but spin the hard drives and turn on the fans. No other good signs of life. I guess this is an excuse to get an Athlon system now. Too bad I'm broke though :|
 
So a Slot 1 P3 866 Should work running 133x6.5? I've never tried anything over a P3 500 at 112FSB = 560, and that wasn't stable. I'm assuming that was just the chip, is that correct?
 
the p3 @527, was a failed attempt to get 600 out of the chip. When everyone at the time was getting 550 easily and 600's occassionaly. I shelled out 100 bucks for a STEP cooling system only to be dissappointed. Now my system is unstable and the cpu fans are broken so now I have two case fans blowing on the dang cpu.


OC is not for me, I don't have good lucky with computers. I'm know a lot about them, but I'm just unlucky.
 
Tasslex: Again, the 133MHz FSB PROCS will work (at spec). The SYSTEM will work only if your vidcard and RAM can handle that speed. The BX6r2 has a 1/4 setting for the PCI, so that isn't a problem. BUT it only offers 2/3 AGP (like all BX mobos) and that puts your AGP at 89MHz. Most GF2 level cards can handle that (my Prophet II can), but I've seen TNT2s and V3s that could not. Of course if you have a PCI vidcard then there is no problem.

The SDRAM has to hit PC133. Some good quality PC100 SDRAM will run 133 if you lower the CAS from 2 to 3 (done in BIOS). Otherwise, spend $40 bucks for a new stick of PC133.

I know the rest of my system will handle it fine - It's my Voodoo3 3000 AGP that worries me - I don't have a clue as to if it will choke on that or not.

Well, worst case scenario I'll run the 866 at a LOWER bus speed than 133 until I can pick up a new video card that can handle it. Even if I have to run it at 6.5x100 for 650 I'll be happy for a while. 🙂
 
Why not get an 800 instead of the 866? If you're not going to OC, then you'll be dead-on spec. You can probably OC the 800 to 897 (8x112) without any AGP/PCI issues. Generally you want to stick to the 100 FSB P!!!s if you're attempting an overclock or if your system is not PC133 compliant.

Some Voodoo3s, particularly later models do fine up to about 83MHz. If a friend has a system you can try your card out in, that would be a good (but not conclusive) test. Also, depending on what you do with your rig, a new vidcard may give you more of a performance boost than a faster proc, if you have to choose between one or the other.

Your OC failure with the P!!!500 was probably just a flaky chip, poor cooling, not enough voltage, etc. That's also an older .25 core, which generally capped at about 600 anyway. A mild OC like 800 to 897 is practically a gimme with .18 CuMine procs. Pushing past 1GHz is when things get chancy.
 
I'm going to buy it off a co-worker IF it shows up - it's from a deal he made in the FS/FT forums here, and he thinks he's getting the screw job since it's been many days and it hasn't shown up - He ordered another chip so he can put his box back together, so I told him if that 866 Slot 1 comes in I'll buy it. I'm perfectly happy with that, I want an uber-fast chip, but I'm going to wait for DDR and Tulatin late this year/next year. I've been running my P3 500 and V3 w/256MB RAM since about the summer of 1998, I'm not in too much of a hurry. (I just want faster kernel compiles and a way to justify buying a GF3 before I get the DDR rig) 🙂
