I'm builidng a dual celeron 366 for a friend...and the a drive light won't go off...the computer does not recognize it... i can bypass this by haulting on no errors and boot of cd-rom(NT)..but then nt still doesn't recognize the drive...i've drived another drive and the same thing happens...i've also tried all possible cable connections...can anyone give me a direction to go...is the motherboard bad? or is it something in the bios?..also after i'll be fooling around with the comp for a while trying to get it to work......it just wont turn on for a while.....and then if i come back in an hour ..it'll turn on fine......??????

make sure the 1 pin on the floppy drive is matched up with the red line on the side of the ide cable. The same goes for the connector on the mobo. The red line on the side of the ide cable shows what side the 1 pin has to be on. For my floppy I had to actually cut off that little black notch on the top of the ide cable because the cable wouldn't match up correctly with my drive. If that doesn't work try making the comp recognize it by enabling a floppy in the bios.

Post this in the General Hardware forum where someone knowledgable is more likely to see it. Mention your system specs and HDD info too.

:)

P.S.

I assume you mean hard drive, not floppy (or ignore the rest).

Review the BIOS parameters in your manual.
Set the BIOS hard drive parameters to auto detect the drive - not manual.
Check the jumpers on the drive.
Try a different cable.
If the HDD's a master put it at the end of the cable. Slave in the middle.
Be sure the BIOS or the drive aren't set wrong WRT ATA/33 or ATA/66. My WDigitals have to be 'enabled' or 'disabled' for either mode, I believe. If the drive is ATA/66 be sure it's enabled in BIOS, in the drive, and you're using an 80 wire cable, not a 40. An 80 is OK with both ATA/33 and ATA/66.
Take a look at this to jog your imagination:

Yes, check the IDE channels. I have the same rig, BP6 w/ 2xC366@550 and have had trouble w/ the ata66 channel. I use the ata33 channel now w/ no problems.
