Hi,

I've currently got an Abit AS8 mobo with a P4 550 3.4 ghz processor and I'm having some issues. I have 2 x 512mb sticks of Geil DDR400 ram. I wanted to add another two so that I could total 2 gigs of ram. When I added the 2nd pair (exactly the same product so I've got 4 x 512mb of the exact same ram, the computer will just randomly reboot itself. Usually when opening or loading a program.

BTW, this is the ram I'm using:

The questions I have are:

Is it advisable to reinstall all software after an upgrade of ram? Do the programs not know what to do with the extra ram because they were installed with only 1 gig available? I understand that not many programs will even utilize that much ram but I'd rather have too much than too little. I'm just trying to figure out what my issues are here.

I have been running the orginal pair for about a year now and newegg still had the ram I purchased so I picked up another pair. I am thinking one or both might be faulty...is that a possibility in this case or would I not be able to boot up into Windows at all? I'm just poking around and I can't seem to come up with a logical conclusion as to why, or when the thing just reboots. I do know that it only happens when I have the 2nd pair installed. I can run Windows fairly well, but it still reboots occasionally. Now, when I try to load a game, it just crashes right away. I only tried it with Battlefield 2, but I assume it'll do the same with everything else.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start by testing the new ram by itself and then with all the ram in place. I'd suggest using memtest86+ to test it. I'd definitely say the new sticks might be suspect.
