Hi,
I've currently got a Celeron 300A @ 450 on my BH6 (rev 1.0) and would like to upgrade. I see that the latest BIOS supports a Celeron 700 (66). Wouldnt that be a FCPGA cpu? Or do they make the celerons still as a slot based setup? If it is FCPGA, will it work on the BH6? What adapter will i need? Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Yes

Or do they make the celerons still as a slot based setup?

They haven't made slot based Celerons since the 466 MHz, if I'm not mistaken.

If it is FCPGA, will it work on the BH6?

Yes, see below.

What adapter will i need?

Go ahead and get a quality slotket adapter. You'll require one to run an FC-PGA CPU. I recommend:

Abit Slotket!!!
Iwill Slotket II
MSI 6905 Master version 2.3

Your BH6 should run a Celeron 700 easily. 10.5x multiplier at 66 MHz FSB. I ran a C700 for a while on both of my BH6 boards.

One thing you might want to consider is a slotket/CPU/fan combo. PowerUp PC of Houston has those combos, as do other resellers. There is a C566 MHz guaranteed to run at 850 MHz @ 100 MHz FSB. I believe it includes a Golden Orb fan too.

OK, thanks for the info burnedout. I havent been in the Celeron line for a year now and have lost track of what is used where ;) Im going to pick up a Celeron 600 or 633 and see about OCing it.

What is the default core voltage for each of those if you know off hand?

What's the max one should take them before thinking twice?

What fan would you suggest? I am not aiming to really oc this processor, but if i can, then i will. So that fan shouldnt be TOO expensive.

Right now the Celeron 300a is runnin @ 2.1v and it runs stable in windows doing the normal stuff, but will freeze if i run games for a long period of time (with dual fans on it too). So i dont want to up the voltage on that any more, so i wanted to get the newer celerons for it instead.

OK, thanks

I'm in Texas, but have done some business with a company called Augustus Technology in CA.

www.augustustech.com

Never knew they existed until I heard about them on Anandtech forums.

They have many Retail Boxed Celerons - 566, 600, 633, etc. for under $60.00. About $10.00 shipping. They shipped my order within 24 hours via UPS ground.

I don't overclock with the earlier zeal and passion I once had much anymore. Normally I'll try to push 66 MHz to 100 MHz, or 100 MHz to 133 MHz. So, regarding a fan/heatsink, I'd say go with a stock Sanyo-Denki heatsink/fan, which is included with a retail boxed CPU, or you can pick them up for between $7-10. I ran a 300A@450 MHz with an earlier, smaller Sanyo-Denki heatsink/fan for months at a time. It should be sufficient. Maybe get a decent case fan too.

But again, do invest in a quality slotket. Name brand. Not some generic stuff.

The proverbial "sweet spot" (likely overclockable) Celerons seems to be in the 533A - 633 range. I believe the 566 holds the greatest potential, but be sure to check over at the CPU/Overclocking forum first. I'm an old school tech anyway, so don't hold my recommendation on that as gospel.

Regarding the voltage: 1.65v is what most FC-PGA Celerons are set. Some early Celeron IIs are at 1.5v.

The Max: I had a 533A to 800 MHz. 8x100 MHz FSB. Tried taking it to 112 MHz FSB. Wouldn't do it. Increased the voltage to 1.6v and I fried it. Again, check over at the CPU/OC forum. There are some experts over there. Lot's of people on Anandtech forums take 566s to 850 MHz. And higher.

Your board should also run a Celeron 800 MHz (100 MHz FSB) with no problem.

I love BH6s. Was going to sell one of mine, but couldn't bring myself to do it. ;)

I will most definately invest in a good slotket. I just flashed the bios to SS, and it goes up to a default multiplier setting of 7.0. I can manually adjust it all the way up to 12 i think. So i could just buy like a celly 2 800 and do a manual 8.0x100, couldnt i?

Next question: I've got a BP6 and currently, as you guessed, am running (2) Celly 366 @ 533mhz. Is there such a thing as a PPGA -> FCPGA type adapter out there? I heard of a WHILE back about one but now i cant remember what it was called, or if it even worked. Any input on this ?

Thanks,

Whoops, just remebered the cellys are multiplier locked. So that 800mhz celly would be sumthin like 12x66, or 12x100, dont think that would work ;) I'll probably just get the Celly 700 retail and forget about ocing it. We shall see.

I did it manually on mine with a C800. 8x100 MHz. Runs good. Still recognizes as a Celeron also.

I also have a BP6. 2x533 MHz CPUs.

No, without a lot of work, a BP6 can't run dual FC-PGA CPUs. I don't believe FC-PGA CPUs will run at all SMP. PIII FC-PGA can. Here's a good link.

link to www.bp6.com

They talk about this in depth on their forums. Touch on it a little on the website itself.

The 800 MHz Celeron has an 8x multiplier and is 100 MHz FSB with 128K of cache. Yes, it will run. I'm running one now. Also running an 866@133 MHz FSB in the other BH6. It's a revision 1.02.

The 800 is running off of a 100mhz bus? Hmmm, i thought all the cellys were on a 66??? I did hear intel was going to make the newer cellys run on the 100 mhz bus, but didint know which ones or when. So it started with the 800?

Do ALL 800 cellys run on the 100mhz bus? Might just have to grab one of those ;)
