I bought this board as it was cheap, only £75 sterling, i wanted the X850 card but needed a PCE mainboard so i though id give VIA another go!.

Well it has a 20 pin ATX, so no converter needed since its designed for 20 pin, seems to have low power requirments my entire rig runs on my default 300 watt smartpower psu.

UGURU is very nice, very tweakable board u can change voltages for almost everything
cpu, mem, northbrige, hypertransport etc. My mem runs at 2.95, but u can select 3.2.
I will post all the options in their at some point.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=683831
thats the score i got with it, but my 24/7 score is about 600 lower.

With my 3500+ winny , im using 11X242, rock solid, however 10X266 is not, my mem is OCZ PC4400 so it should cope, it did on the NF3 this replaced.

10X266 worked most of the time and i could game for hours, so sometimes it would reboot, this might well be my PSU however but its rails are quite steady though.

The only rail thats out of spec if SBVDD, this is at 2.16, anyone know what this does?

I found that 11X242 and 10X266 gave me almost identical scores, so in my case this was no problem, just used tigher mem timings.

It has proper working PCI locks.

The sata raid is fast, windows XP feels very fast, things like opening display properties and mangagement console are instand from cold. I find that im usally the first person in CS source thats loaded the map, and sometimes i can run about for 20 seconds waiting for the others to join. The joys of a fast system :)

It dosn't have dual gigabit, i dont need it so not a problem to me.

It only has 4 satas, but it does have 3 X ide's (6 drives) strange but usefull.

I like the placement of the IDE's & ATX well tidy.

You can choose the voltages you want to give to the system and cpu fans, along with
the temp threshold to increase it.

Also you can save your cmos settings in a little menu and have up to 6 stored, i found this feature killer! Now if have to clear my cmos i can reload all the details, instead of having to re-set them all each and every time a total pain. I don't know other boards have this but my msi nf3 and msi nf4 i tested don't have this.

I found my temps to be reported higher about 10oC when compared to the msi Nf3,
now it hots 57oC under load instead of 47-50. I have no stability problems though.
Case temp is 33 at idle, but i meased this and it was more like 23.

I have a coolermaster hyper6 cooler/artic silver5 dual 80mm sunon fans at 7 volts.
dual 120mm antec fans in cheap antec case again 7 volts.

voltage tweaks
--------------------
cpu core 1.4-1.75
mem 2.5-3.2
nb 1.5-1.65
sb 2.5-2.65
ht 1.2-1.4

Bus tweaks
-------------------
PCI 33/37/44
PCI-E 90-130
FSB 200-400
DRAM 200,266,333,400, every timing seems to their.

Update!!
Ok stable at 294FSB X 9 HT-3 when memory set to 333 instead of 400, so a 3000+ winny will get some nice legroom.

boots at into windows 339 FSB X 8, no tests done but this board seems to like high fsb.

Thanks for the info. I was looking to buy one of these around the beginning of the year but they kept delaying and delaying the release.

Can you select 1T vs 2T timing? Are your numbers above at 1T or 2T?

you sure can, numbers are 1T

I'm going to turn this into a review, once i play with it a bit more
Since i can't find any decent reviews on this board. I can
only compare it againt my msi nf3 board, that my cpu and mem used to be in
but i get the almost the same overclocking results with via as with nf3 ultra.

Don't know why but peeps have something againt via. I hope to dispell any myths
about this board.

CPU-Z 1GB PN- OCZ5501024PFDC-K is what i have.
OCZ DDR PC-4400 / 550MHz / Performance Series /Dual Channel. I don't know is its TCCD based maybe someone knows?

My CPUs stable limit is approx 2670 at 1.6 volts, however better cooling/more volts may give more, but in each mode i tested that figure remained then same within 20mhz. I belive this is the limit for my chip with air cooling.

Here is what has been tested :

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8 X 333 CAS 3 4 4 8 1T HT 3X mode = 999 DDR-266 = 2664
9 X 295 CAS 2.5 4 4 8 1 T HT 3X mode = 885 DDR-333 = 2655
10 X 266 CAS 3 4 4 8 1 T HT 4X mode = 1064 1:1 = 2660*
11 X 242 CAS 2.5 4 4 8 1T HT 4X mode = 968 1:1 = 2662
11 X 234 CAS 2.5 4 4 8 1T HT 5X mode = 1170 1:1 = 2574

*(fastest overall for winny 3500+ memory/ht/clock/subjective)

donnelly,

thanx for the good info. I believe your ram is hynix based??? but it is definetely not TCCD ($$$$).

I do have another question if ya dont mind. Whats the max HTT in 5x mode. If you keep your cpu multi at default (11) how far can you run your fsb before you have to shift to 4x??. Curious because the soltek kt890 board got to 1180 HT stable, memory 1:1 before it choked and would assume the abit could do as well..

much appreciated

Ok tested this out and i found my board to choke at 5X 236Mhz. i mean it wont post at all.
5X 234 seems stable, but slower than the rest of modes testedt for my winny 3500 it dosn't produce a really clock speed .

However it might be a choice for a really high multiplier chip e.g the 4000+ or higher, with very tight timings memory. 12X 234 = 2808.

Looks like 1170-HTT which is right in line with the soltek and very respectable as well. I figure you could reach a 290 fsb 1:1 at 4x if your ram could take it but thats a stretch as all anyone could muster outa the perf series OCZ 4400's was 280, too bad there are no (.5) cpu dividers?? How does your setup bench at 10x266 compared to your past NF3? I personally dont mind giving up a percent or 2 performance for 100% stability across the board. I'm currently runnin an XP-2500 at 11.5*200 or 2.3 Ghz (XP-3300) on a MSI KT6 and have been runnin it for the most part 24/7 the past year with NO issue. Video editing, gaming, throttling the cpu at 100% (runnin Prime95 in background for days) and never a crash. The more I read these forums, the more I'm turned off with NVidia chipsets.

I'm gonna wait and make sure the AX8 will run Rev-E winnies before I pull the trigger............

How does your setup bench at 10x266 compared to your past NF3?
Almost identical, subjectively faster due to better drivers for RAID/CHIPSET.

If you wanted absolute stability id run 10 X 264, still out benches the FX-55 at default and is pleny fast enough
and allowed 1.55 volts instead of 1.6 making is cooler and quieter.

What i didn't like about NF3 and NF4

1. SATA/RAID drivers, bad very bad. NF3/4

2. Noisy northbridge fans NF3/4 , my pc is almost slient! 7 volt fans all round, except when gaming my X850 sounds like hairdryer.

3. NF4 was not stable at above 220fsb for me (MSI one)
(NF3 was fine however)

4. Random reboots that have no explaination. NF4

5. Broken PCI lock. Whats the point of 8 satas, when only 2 are usable? even then unstable. NF3/4

In your 1st post you indicated your SBVDD was 2.16, it should be between the parameters you listed shortly below 2.5 to 2.65. This is your south bridge controller voltage, aka disk, usb yada-yada...

Lookin at abits manual they indicate a MINIMUM 350 watt PS and your runnin a 300 watt. I would guess that your runnin it at the very edge and quite honestly Its amazing to me your gettin the results you are with no disk or I/O corruption. A modest investment in better PS might allow you to find the real limit of your system...

yeah i need a better psu, but my antec true430 died! so i used the stock psu, the psu runs HOT for sure but its stable!

I also have a 100% working 380watt true ANTEC that works fine, but its rails are Lower and was beyound hot, like the heat you feel of a toaster or hairdyer.

Guess my antec 300watt is a real gem, quite amazing since im running a DVD-writer,CD-writer, 2 X raptors, 1 hitachi deathstar,
1 X ati 850XT, 3 X 80mm fans, 2X 120mm fans and a nicely overclocked pc!

I'd say that i need a 500+watt plus dual rail psu to find the limit of my pc, then i'd get higher overclocks from my graphics
card, cpu and memory! and with less heat.

When budget allows im going to get Enermax EG701AX-VE(W) http://www.enermax.com.tw/products_page.php?Tid=1&gon=261&Gid=18&Gid2=45

This is No modest investment lol however! i am thinking long term here.

Are you overall happy that you purchased this VIA based board vs NF4? and I also would like to know how the sound is.

i use the optical out to my SHERWOOD RVD 6095 amp and it sounds great. Its not really onboard then since its a digital connetion with no interferance.

if you read up you will find why i didnt like the NF4.
I have no complaints with this board

I've read good things about the Soltek SL-K890Pro-939. How does this motherboard compares to the Abit 8X? Which one is more stable at stock and overclocked? Which one would YOU buy today?

I've read that the Abit uses Japanese capacitors. Unfortunately, both Abit and Soltek boards were plagued with bad caps a few years back.

They're both stable at stock.

The AX8 is better for overclocking. "FSB" is in the 200-410MHz and we've seen people boot it as high as 339MHz; on the Soltek it's 200-300MHz and the best I've seen is 291MHz.

ABIT, Soltek and many other had problems with capacitors.

thanks!

I've read stories about thermal issues with the AV8. Since the AX8 is based on the AV8 with new northbridge, I wasn't sure if the old thermal problem was addressed.

I've been looking at the AX8 too. I was planning on buying it when it first came out, but a friend got it and said it was slow and randomly crashed. He upgraded the BIOS (or something like that!), bye-bye crashes, and then bought a 200GB Seagate Barracuda and the whole thing sped up. Now he loves it. In fact, at the beginning he hated it so much he actually put it on eBay!

I found this link, though : http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review_print.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD0x Dky. It may be of an Intel board, but they compare it to another Intel and the AX8 with an FX-55. Sure enough, the AX8 wins the majority of the tests, quite often by quite a way. I have decided to wait until May to build my rig because by then I will have more money, and also Custom PC magazine are meant to be doing a review on it.

BTW, any updates on the boards performance?
