ABit AT7 locking up when installing onboard sound drivers

Have had a few of these boards with no problems on installing the onboard sound. Each time i attempt, i get a hard lockup and have to restart the computer....it also corrupts the IDE controller for the CDROM...have to use system restore...this is a fresh install of xp pro, with xp2000, mushkin pc2100 memory, NO OC, everthing is fine xcept the sound drivers. The new ones from Abit are not even the right ones....MOMOs put realtek drivers as the download....sound is AVANCE VIA....went to VIA arena for the latest drivers...same thing...lockup!

Am i missing a bios setting....? ONboard sound is enabled....APIC is disabled.
