Abit AN8-Ultra VS Gigabyte K8N Ultra-9

I'm stuck deciding between the two. I definitely need a Socket 939 motherboard, and I definitely do NOT want one with SLI capability.

I'm afraid of the AN8-Ultra because of the passive cooling design and various problems reported about memory.

I'm afraid to go with the K8N Ultra9 because I'm new to Gigabyte!!

Which would you go with? Someone please help!

Yeah i am buying a motherboard this weekend too ;( . I don't care about SLI just like you but i am looking towards DFI Ultra.
I want a motherboard with :
1 Gigabit nic
HD intergated sound
Great overclocking feature so it can oc AMD X2 3800+ to 2.4Ghz easy or 2.6GHz
2x sata + 2x sata raid
Rock solid stable

If i could get the damn Sapphire ATI RX480 motherboard i would. but can't find them in stock. stupid ati and its availability issue. I didn't care about USB issue as i only use a USB mouse + USB keyboard + PSP. which work great on USB 1.0.

If you are afraid of a board's design then don't buy it. I have an AN8 Ultra and it is my second build. Went together easy and works wonderfully. No issues with heat even when overclocked.

Played around with memory timings on the Mushkin Redline PC3500 until I got it tight enough for my tastes, 2228 at 1T command rate (7 or 8 supposed to be best for NF4 chips). I would buy it again if I had to do it over. Can take my 4000+ to 2760 on air without a sweat. Board overvolts the cpu and undervolts the ram.

The most common issue I've read about are people with 3000+ Venice core chips not being able to run a 1T command rate.

Have on old Gigabyte 686BX board from 1998 that was recently retired. Good solid product. Both companies are good. Have fun with your selection.

Oh, the Abit KN8 Ultra is similar to the AN8. It has legacy ports like serial if you need one. No Uguru software, acitve northbridge cooling (if heatpipe is a worry) and lower ram voltage options if you choose to run TCCD chips.

I looked into DFI's NF4 Ultra Infinity, but in the end I decided against it. Also looked at the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, but decided against that as well.

Overall, I've had an excellent experience with Abit. It's just hard sometimes to tell the difference between legit issues with design and "boogeyman" talk.
