Abit AN7: how to fix choppy sound on Optical Out?

This just started happening a few nights ago. For a few days I'd had the optical connection enabled, and the analog one disabled (not even connected), and the sound was fine; connected via a 3 or 4 foot long optical cable. Recently, though, playing realmedia or mp3 files (didn't try others) was giving choppy sound, like every few seconds it would cut out then come back in. It wasn't my processor as far as I can tell; I have a decent machine and nothing else was running.

Any ideas? Worse comes to worst I'll pop in my old soundblaster live! 5.1 and disable onboard sound, but I'd rather use soundstorm.

I haven't updated the BIOS from whatever version it shipped with, since it hasn't had any problems until now.
