Ability To Delete own posts and/or threads

Hey mods. i think a really good feature might be to actually be able to delete your own post.

For example, sometimes people accidently double post. With such a feature that i'm proposing, posters themselves will be able to take care of it. Also, the ability to delete threads should help with the infamous R[/l] that people like to use so often.

I suppose it might be problematic from the simple reason that doing such a thing would also have to lower your post number? The more mature members that don't need a large post number to show off would use such a feature. I know i will. There have been times when i've posted something and regretted it. I can edit and simply say nvm, but being able to delete my own stuff might help.

Discuss.

yeah how allisolm? i think i've seen this used in other forums. only your own posts. i suppose maybe if you managed to hack a password of someone else but you can do much worse stuff then that.

what i meant is to be able to have a button near the reply, quote, top, bottom, edit the allows me to delete the my own post.

1. "...but you said..."
'No, I didn't. There's no such post."

2. Someone posts "ponitfex ***** ***** and *****" when he knows pontifex is online," then deletes in a minute or two.

3. Spammers/bad people in general could post links to porn, phishing sites, viruses, etc disguised as other things and then delete them after a bit.

4. I can imagine lots of posting and deleting in P&N!

I'm sure you can come up with other examples. Where there's a way, there's always going to be folks who will use it.

The potential for abuse seems... ginormous.

abuse? how? you can only delete your own posts, not someone else's posts.
on other boards i have visited you could delete your own post but only if done within a certain amount of time, and only if no one had responded to you yet.

That would make more sense. I can still envision some problems, but I don't know what abilities the mods have, whether they could see deleted posts, identify deleters, etc. That's why I said the POTENTIAL for abuse is there.
