Donna Lupi said she shops at Abercrombie & Fitch because it is the only store where the clothes fit well for her and her daughter.
Lacy Lupi, Donna's daughter said she is happy with her recently purchased clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch, but she was not happy with what she and her mother went through when buying them.
"We get up there, we've got two huge piles, and they start taking sensors off. Next thing I know, they start whispering and then the manager calls me over and says, 'We have to speak to you. We have a problem,'" Donna Lupi said.
Donna and Lucy were told they were "over the limit." They wanted to buy too much.
"She said, 'We've had a problem with foreigners and since we cannot discriminate against someone from another country, we decided to put a policy in place that prevents anyone from purchasing more than 20 items,'" Donna Lupi said.
"They basically told us that foreigners were coming in and purchasing a lot of items in bulk and then selling them overseas for three times as much," Lacy Lupi said.
The Lupis had 23 items on the counter. They charged 20 and, because they complained, the store let them pay cash for the three that exceeded the limit.
Abercrombie & Fitch said their policy was intended to "protect our brands from the resale of authentic merchandise at inflated prices through non-company owned stores and Internet auction sites."
On eBay, Consumer Alert found thousands of Abercrombie & Fitch listings for women's clothing.
Whether it is online or overseas, Lacy and Donna said they were disgusted by the policy.
"It's ridiculous. It's the stupidist thing I've ever heard in my life," Lupi said. "To me it was an insult. It was a smack on the face."
The Lupis said they spent $700 and were considering a coat, but after their experience they question whether they would ever shop at that store again.
