ABCnews.com Report: Depleted Uranium Easy to Bring to US

A reporter with a lead-lined suitcase full of depleted uranium (non-fissile though) tracked its progress from Istanbul right to the middle of NYC--smooth sailing with no questions asked.

But since the material in the container had left Austria, 25 days and seven countries ago, it had gone entirely undetected, even after going through the most rigorous screening U.S. Customs says it has.

All they left out was the headline "ATTENTION TERRORISTS:". Sometimes the stupidity of the press in this country truly amazes me.

Well if this material is so dangerous as the news reporter makes it out to be, ABCNews and all the people involved in this report should be brought up ob charges of terrorism and transporting hazardeous material and giving aid to the enemy(by showing them how to get it into US boarders).

Eh this is kinda similar to when people post eploits on computer systems, what do you do?
Do you kick their ass for showing everyone in the world how to do it? Or do you praise them for bringing it to our attention (be serious, how many people here really believe terrorists don't know how to do this already....if a JOURNALIST can figure it out youd be a dumb terrorist if you couldn't figure it out too).

this is what journalism is about. exposing the illusion of security that our government has carefully crafted is something that needed to be done.

As you mentioned, this wouldn't be anything new for terrorist. I dont think comparable to a code exploit by a hacker, for instance.

how do you propose we fix it? develop sensors that can pick up radiation through lead? theres a reason they use lead shielding.

Depleted uranium isn't harmful. You can probably pick it up in the desert of Iraq after all the action of the Gulf War (tanks can fire shells made of this type of uranium).

What I want to know is if it was enriched would it be detected? According to some sources exposed nuclear material can be seen from space if there's enough of it and if you're looking for it.

Depleted uranium IS harmfull. (if you injest it, just like all heavy metals) Depleted uranium IS radioactive, but the radiation level is MINISCULE. You can probably get a better dose of radiation from an xray than sleeping on a depleted uranium bed for a year.

Supposidly all our port facilities contain radiation sensors.

So they smuggled 15 lbs of barely radioactive material inside a lead lined pipe?

BFD.
