I was walking downtown Denver the other night after a ball game and they had law enforcement all over the places checking all the planters and trash cans and things for bombs and such. Kinda freaky seeing them do that.

He wasn't arrested because he was a reporter - it sounds like he was arrested because he was told to leave or move across the street or something, and he didn't follow that order, for which they can arrest you. He should have moved, and protested it and filed complaints with the proper people, but he was probably being typical media and pressing the issue. But who knows.

I think that this is probably par for the course for both Democrats and Republicans.

I remember seeing somewhere on tv where a tv crew was trying to tape name tags for some lobbyist party in Washington and name tags were quickly gathered up and tv crew asked to leave.

Plus if he just wanted to photograph the donors / lobbyists for later identification, why not just use a telephoto lens from a building across the street?

Before you start blaming the democrats, you might wait for more facts to come in, but your own link says the complaint that led to his arrest was signed by the hotel. It may be a semi public sidewalk, but one stationary reporter plus an entire camera crew can due much to disrupt access to the hotel. And some of those Camera crews can be real arrogant prigs who think they can order the general public around.

As for me, I will wait for facts before I access blame.

Let's spin it with assumptions about the other party

Barring any new, earth-shattering facts, I have to (cant believe I am saying this) side with the press... ESPECIALLY when they arrest him on the OTHER side of the street. There would need to be some really nasty facts against the reporter to change my mind... like while he was taking pictures, he was throwing feces on them... something like that. It seems pretty obvioius that, regarless of the "infraction," he was arrested to prevent him from photographing politicians with their "bosses." Would it have been the same at the GOP convention? Can't say either way... we will have to see when they meet. But it DID happen at the DNC convention.

Care to explain how it applies to either party? The denver pd aren't a democratic organization. When nypd cops were overzealous in their treatment of protestors in 2004 one could hardly accuse them of acting on behalf of the RNC. I mean, it's manhattan for chrissake. It votes 90% democrat.

No, at the GOP convention they arrest everyone, not just journalists. Over 1800 individuals were arrested but 90% of those charges were eventually dropped.

Again, I don't see how this applies to the dems or the reps. It was the police who acted.

Reminds me the lack of press freedom in China while watching Olympics. And we like to accuse the other side being oppressive.

He was arrested and will likely be let go without charges. He wasn't thrown in a cell in a dungeon and beaten with a firehose. Let's not lose perspective, yeah?

Not to mention china's "news reporters" work for state run media and only "report" what the government wants reported, and run under a veil of total censorship.

The sheriff's officer is seen telling Eslocker the sidewalk is owned by the hotel. Later he is seen pushing Eslocker off the sidewalk into oncoming traffic, forcing him to the other side of the street.

It was two hours later when Denver police arrived to place Eslocker under arrest, apparently based on a complaint from the Brown Palace Hotel, a central location for Democratic officials.

Pushing someone into oncoming traffic for taking pictures?

Do you feign the same sort of shock when paperazzi are roughed up trying to take photos of celebrities in Hollywood?

Tom Delay is probably disappointed that that reporter wasn't clubbed to the ground before being dragged off in handcuffs.

If every time reporters got hustle and arrested covering these corruption events, we wouldnt get the inside story, no matter how reporters are being treated. Freedom of Press is being beaten down in this case. It's a slippery slope we are treading on.

so if that is the case he should never have been arrested/detained. If he violated a law, prosecute... If not, then he was illegally detained

Once you get Cops in Riot gear the odds of your Civil Liberties diminishing go up greatly.

It's quite plausible that the hotel itself was just attempting to protect the privacy of it's rich clientele.

Seems to me that this reporter was just trying to stir the pot to create a scene / story, like if Michael Moore and his camera crew tried to interview Republican senators as they passed Larry Craig's bathroom at the Minneapolis - St. Paul Airport on the way to the Republican convention.

THAT would be funny. I am no Michael Moore fan, but even I would pay to see that :)

Sorry to who may disagree. But this is pure horseshit! We have allowed our federal/state/local government too much leeway. Now we reap the rewards of our apathy.
