It was bound to happen. When she pulls the VeraCruz into the garage it's not uncommon for her to hit things on the left, or hit things on the right. Nothing that makes any damage. Stuff like snow shovels, bike, etc. She often pulls too far forward and hits the wall. I actually put some big rocks on the garage floor to prevent her from pulling so far forward.

Well, this AM she backed the car out of the garage and for some reason didn't pull STRAIGHT out. She ended up winging the passenger side rear view mirror on the door frame.

The whole thing shattered. And what sucks is it's one of those mirrors with the heating element for the glass, turn signal, side marker lights, etc. I called the Hyundai dealer and it's $850 just for the part... UNPAINTED! Then they have to paint and install it and that's going to cost even more.

Despite this my wife still wanted to drive the car. I said no way. She asked me to tape the glass back up into what was left of the housing, but I wanted a chance to better assess the damage before I let her touch the thing. Told her to take my car for now (wonder how she'll smash that thing up today.)

I disconnected the wires and pulled the glass off thinking that it might fall off the rest of the way on the way into the office this AM. But since I won't have the part for a week, I'm probably going to use some packing tape and strap the mirror back into place.

I just hate crap like this. If she was more careful this stuff wouldn't happen. Now it's going to cost me a small fortune to fix. I'm so frustrated with her.

OP, I have amended your topic subtitle to make it more suitable for our forums. Even if you just meant that metaphorically you'd commit physcial violence on your wife for an accident, it is still NOT suitable.

They should require more frequent re-licensing for women, just like they should for old people.

She does have a driver's license, right? It sounds like she'd be dangerous on the road. This sounds like a pretty chronic problem that she's not working on fixing. Back when I was learning to drive, I think my parents would have freaked out on me if I'd have hit anything, no matter how minor it might be. If I hit one thing, there's a chance I'd hit other, more important things, like pedestrians or parked cars.

I hate it when people seem to take driving so lightly. You're piloting a huge block of metal and plastic that weighs a few thousand pounds. It shouldn't be treated like some toy.

I had to laugh at the utter honesty in the topic summary. :)

That would really frustrate me, especially since it seems she is pretty bad driver and not careful anyway...850 dollars just for the part too, thats not a small mistake thats like you could have had a new xbox 360 w/ 4 controllers and a bunch of games!

Dunno about all wives, but my wife's car has a partially shattered passenger side mirror for just that reason, from years ago when we still had a garage. Adjusted it to her preferred position, glued it in place. It's ugly but the fix was cheap.

Don't let the thing dangle freely. It'll scratch up the door.
I always wonder why people drive around with a mirror flopping.

Avoid the dealer parts department, unless you have money to burn. duh
