I need some good instructional videos (online, dvd, pirated, nonpirated) to show me how a good golf swing for driving the ball should work.

I used to hit 85-90 averages on most courses and lately I've been playing horrible. I think it's because I haven't played in a while and I can't hit a good drive any more. I want some good instructional videos because I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I hit the ball very consistent - but it's always a low hard draw now.. and I used to always hit a very high light draw.

Going to the driving range doesn't really help since I am already consistent.. I just consistently hit the ball the wrong way every time. When I try to correct it, it makes it worse... So, instead of trying to figure things out myself, I need to see the right way to hit a ball with the driver.

Any videos you would recommend?

(I'm drunk.. plz forgive me if I sound all funky)

Your drives shouldn't be responsible for that large of an increase in score, chances are your entire game sucks right now.

I never TOUCH my driver 'cept maybe twice and score 100.

Go see your pro.

You can't teach yourself.

My guess would be:

1) your grip is too strong
2) playing ball too far forward in your stance
3) a combination of 1 and 2

you'll feel yourself turning over too soon. I fight it all the time, it comes from trying to correct a slice...you're over compensating and not letting your hand release freely. You're forcing your hands to turn over - that probably has a lot tlo do with your grip and setup.

only a professional can fix it. I am not a golf professional. But I am drunk as well!

LOL, and that's why you score 100.

I had a guy fix my swing over the phone the last time I was in Maui. (I was renting clubs from him) It was the most unbelievable "Mr Myagi" thing I've ever experienced. Asked me a few questions... Told me to point my foot this way... Swing that way... Finish like that...

So I hit the range before my round. First ball, straight as an arrow... 250.
Second ball
Third ball
Tenth ball... Wow.

Played the best round of my life.

Last course I played was 7200 yards.. I think I used my driver for maybe 13 of 18 holes. Maybe you played a par 60?

The driver is a HUGE part of the game. But, since my drives are bad, my fairway woods are bad and my 2-5 irons are suffering as well. My putting lately has been better than ever.

On today's long courses, a solid drive is paramount.. and my drive has been horrible lately and I can't seem to correct it.

It sounds like good advice. But, I've always had a strong grip (even when I was hitting 85's) and it seems to give me better control. My golf instructer that I had at the time said my strong grip wasn't hurting me and he taught with it and told me to keep a more closed face than normal.

Number 2 seems maybe like the real problem. For drives, I put the ball about even with my left foot (I'm right-handed). I'm thinking I should try playing the ball back more (towards my right foot) and starting with a normal open face rather than the closed face I was originally taught.

God.. I it sucks going from a 275-yard average drive where the drive was the best part of my game to a 240-yard average drive where it's the worst part. Bleh. I hate golf. Must play it more.

wtf are you talking about. errant drives, along with a poor short game, are the main reason high handicappers score high. one OB shot costs 2 strokes. a slice into the trees costs another. oops there's one in the water. you use your driver probably 13-14 times a round, and poor second shot position will easily increase your score by 1-1.5 strokes per hole if you don't know what the heck you're doing.

i wouldn't play the driver off your right foot. inside your left is probably the best position. how does the ball start. is it starting straight then going left or starting left? you said the flight was low, where are you contacting it on the face? playing it back certainly won't help matters because you need to get the driver on the upswing.

these things are typically are hard to fix without seeing your swing which is why taking a lesson is probably your best option. you need the basics of grip, stance, posture, and setup correct and i'm betting it's one of those things, and not your swing.

I said I was hitting a hard low draw (which is almost a hook). I used to always hit a very high light draw which is usually the most desirable type of shot.

Its all a matter of opinion. 85 to 90 is not great. haha thats what i shoot. I wish i could shoot lower. It takes alot alot of practice. But i must say that i think short game < driving. Hit it in the fairwair or close to and you are not in bad shape. Putting and short wedges is what really gets you tho.

Almost sounds like the problem I was having...

I wanted more distance so I started trying to hit a draw. Worked really well and I started drawing the ball.

But what happened was I started trying to draw the ball too much:

turning over too hard and too soon

left me with a low, almost snap hook sometimes. I moved the ball back in my stance some and relaxed my hands. now 280+ everytime with only a slight draw. I still hook it sometimes and you can feel it when you do, so maybe you're running into what I did.

closing the club and forward in your stance = I can't see how you wouldn't hit a low draw.

This thread reminds me that I need to get some golf lessons scheduled. My long game is really atrocious.

heh, do what I did. Get a 1 and 2 iron.

that 1 iron is like hitting with a putter, but the 2 iron can really fly.

I'd say get rid of the 1 and 2 iron. :p

meh, hitting greens from 230 out with my 2 iron is far too satisfying to get rid of it.

;)

1 iron is useless however.

I'm missing something important, uh... what's the word? Yes, "form". That's it. Or skill.

One of the two certainly. :D

My problems are best addressed by a professional. Politics are too big of a deal at the neighborhood country club though, gotta get outside help.

Maybe it's the driver?
On a whim, I bought a new driver several years ago... til then, I left the driver at home so I wouldn't tempt fate. (I couldn't hit a driver to save my life.) I was awesome at putting... and hit my long irons incredibly straight. (I also sucked at chipping at the time.)

Well, I tried the driver... aimed for a telephone pole at the back of the range...
I was amazed at the distance and accuracy I had... Never before could I hit a driver straight. I came within a couple of feet of hitting that pole on several shots.

Later, while playing on a golf course, I drove the green on a couple of par 4's. Ironically, my putting went to hell and I ended up with par both times. I never made it out last year... too busy. I'll be out next week; hopefully...

I'm still trying to figure out how your driver is costing you 15-20 strokes a round.

Now I'm not saying there's nothing wrong, but if you're scores are up that much, you're either missing every putt, or there's something wrong with your swing (as in, all of your swings), not your drive.

Living in a place with winter, I'm still trying to get back up to speed this year (usually high 80s or low 90s, I've gone over 100 for the first time in years this year:(). But it's my swing that's the problem, even though it shows up the most on my drives.
