Been playing Aardwolf since 1998, and it was around for a few years before that...

The same owner runs it today as he did back in 1995, which I find amazing.

www.aardmud.org

Highly recommend it, if you're able and willing to play a text based game. I recommend downloading their customized client for it, allows the best color / map that I've seen, makes it even more enjoyable.

It's the kind of game I play on my gaming rig, my netbook, and my computer at work... It works on anything!

Anyone else here playing?

- Override (same name since 1998!)

Never could get into MUDs myself. Nice to see them still out there for those that do like them.

Yep. Been playing Aardwolf on and off for years. It's the only one that keeps me coming back. It's fairly easy to get playing. I also suggest the official mushclient on their website over telnet as it has a built-in mapper.

Hum. Long ago I worked on caltech, and arctic; and now and then i still check in on mume. Muds were great in the 90s. Never heard of Aardwolf.

Caltech was an interesting mud; it only ran for a year or two and I did 90% of the coding; but i never played. The fellow that handled the areas and such did a great job of pleasing folks. This was my first real 'peak' under the hood experience when I learned that malloc (like much of the code I wrote) had its limitations and if used in certain ways did horrible thigns.. arctic is one of the longer running muds; it still runs. The mechanics were a bit funky but most (all) the initial coders left - I think I left around 1995 or 1996 and the primary imp turned thigns over to a new crowd around 1999 or 2000 - very different than Mume's story.

That's cool. I used to play AlexMUD in the 90s. Definitely heard of Aardwolf though never tried it.

Played AustinMUD for over 11 years. I actually played CaltechMUD when it was up, good MUD, but short lived. I think I got on Aardwolf for a very short time to check it out when it was new, but as always got pulled back to Austin or StrangeMUD (which I was a god on about the same time Aardwolf was starting)

AustinMUD is still up and running, with a lot of the same IMPS, if you ever want to check it out. I haven't popped in there in a few years now, so I don't know how active the player base is.

I played some MUDs in college over telnet in 94? 95? Can you play them over an iPhone?
wouldn't it be uncomfortable to play on phone because it includes a lot of typing?

I played on Onyx from 95-99 ish... then it just died. For a few years after that I actually had dreams that I was still playing. Then I was introduced to WoW and would never go back to text again.

I played the original MUD/British Legends on both Compuserve back in the mid-90s and later when it migrated to the web. Got an immortal on there. Very simplistic compared to most of the popular MUDs now, but god it was tons of fun. As evidenced by the bill I racked up playing it on CIS (hourly fee to play).
