A friend of mine has started putting fake twitter hashtags in their emails.

Example:

Blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah, blah blah. Next week will be fine. #girlsnightout

THEY DON'T EVEN USE TWITTER!

wtf?

#hashtag

I was talking with my mom last week and she asked me "what are those pound signs they put next to words for?" Those are hashtags. "hash-what? I thought they were pound symbols"

Hashtags are "the thing" now I guess. I see them used more on Facebook than I do on Twitter. *shrug*

They are an artifact of a crippled communications system, that has to carry meta-information inline/in-band with the actual information. I would be able to tolerate out-of-band semantic metadata, but in-band is just poor engineering. I have no idea why that ever became popular. Twitter is broken from the start, but its popularity is an ill fate for us all. Someone should fix it already.
And for gods sake move your meta-data out of band. Your system is broken!
....and if I ever catch you using a # prepended to an out-of-band semantic tag, I will find you, and destroy you.
