AAARGH! Serious hardware failure error in XP

I had just received a Thermaltake Ducting mod and an Optorite DVD burner and was busy installing them on Monday. Everything seemed to be working fine...started up without a hitch (minus some minor driver snafus but I worked those out fairly easily). I shut down last night and when I started up this morning there was a rattling sound as if something was loose and XP came up with the "windows has recovered from a serious error" screen and it listed the error as a CPU error with a code of "STOP000000010101000" etc., whatever that means. I opened up my box and the sound seems to be coming from the CPU or by my RAM. The error window kept popping up repeatedly so I shut it down until I can deal with it after work today. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I'd appreciate any insight anyone has on the subject and if any more information is needed please let me know.

System:

NF7-S 2.0 mobo
Athlon XP 1700+ Tbred (not o/ced atm)
Alpha PAL8045 with Vantec Stealth Fan
512MB PC2700 RAM
DD0203 Optorite DVD Burner
Maxtor 80GB Ultra ATA133

is your cpu fan working? i can't think of anything else that could make a "rattling" noise by the cpu??? make sure no wires or cables are hitting the fan blades.

Yeah, from my quick diagnosis everything was powered and working...just kept getting that error.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't try taking the whole thing apart and reseating the HS on the CPU. Would that help things?

That's not a bad idea, also,
Does this look like it could be the error you're getting? It seemed like it could be relevant since you had some trouble with drivers. To address the rattling be certain to reseat everything, check for loose screws, check to see if any fans are making it and/or running too low RPM.

Hmm, it could have been my dvd burner rattling too, I didn't think of that. Hmm, that makes me feel much better, whew! Hopefully when I get home I'll have more information on it.

One of the things that it did say on the error message, however, was that there was some sort of CPU error, which is why I was wondering if that could be something to do with it. I will double-check temps and hd space (dvd-rs take up a lot of room ) but the rattling could definitely be coming from the burner.

Well, oddly enough the damn thing started up w/o a hitch. No more rattling, no freaky-deaky error messages, nada.

That's somehow more disturbing though. Oh well.
