AAARGH, MY COMPUTER IS BROKEN, PLEASE HELP !!!!

I'm in serious need of a little advice. My computer has some severe problems, basically it gets to the Windows 98 blue load screen then no further, displaying a black screen with a little white line at the top left corner.
The computer will load into safe mode but from there I cant get any status reports to see whats up. My CPU is overclocked but has been stable for ages, and when I load the Fail-Safe BIOS settings it still refuses to boot. There's been no smell of burning etc from the CPU and Im at a loss for what to do next.
What can the problem be related to considering it boots up in Safe Mode but not in regular? Is it drivers? Any help would be seriously and eternally appreciated.🙁

I'm living with my Grandmother and with my computer broken it means I actually have to start talking to her. Please dont make me do it! (sob):disgust:

It doesn't sound like a hardware failure.

As W98 boots up, press F8 and select "create boot log" instead of Safe Mode from the menu. Then look at the end of the file to get a clue about the cause. (Which you can do by booting to Safe Mode I guess.) The name of the boot log file is BOOTLOG.TXT and it is normally immense.

Most likely it has something to do with the video driver, or a corrupt registery. What people generally do is reinstall W98 over itself.

Put your windows CD in and select repair windows. It will save all your stuff and just repair any windows files that may be damaged or corrupt.

I dont think Win98 has that feature.

I would try removing any cards you dodn't need, like modem, sound, network. Then only use a single stick of ram if possible. If it's booting into safe mode, it's doing it using a minimum of resources and drivers. Did you install anything, or have other problems prior to this?

If you can boot with safe mode, run msconfig.exe and uncheck everything that loads with win98. Then you can use the process of elimination to try and determine what is hanging you.

Id definately say reinstall windows But of coarse only after you try the process of elimination with the boot in msconfig
