Why are you so opposed to SP1?

Been using it since before it was released, haven't had a single problem with it.

Download the VM from Sun. That's how I did it. Works like a champ.

EDIT: Not only beaten, but beaten with a link included.

I used Sun's Java client prior to SP1, & found it to be a buggy POS.

I am MUCH happier with the MS client, but YMMV.

Yeah, me too. I've noticed a serious lag with the sun VM when loading applets.

Did the link work for yall? No pages on java.sun.com seem to want to come up for me?!

Even for those people, there are ways around.

I never said that. I do know there are ways around, I already have XP w/ SP1 on cd.... I just don't want to be bothered with that.

I am about to make the switch to Linux for now... I think. Wishful thinking I wont need M$ updates hehe

The only reason I know is that both my roommate & I own copies of XP that were distributed at a MS event.

I used the disc I received, & use WPA whenever I re-install (getting to be a pain, but oh well). My roommate opted to use a cracked corporate version rather than deal with WPA. So while he has a legal XP license, his working installation is one that would have been affected by SP1.

If you have to reinstall your OS more than once a release, you are probably having hardware problems.

Oh yah, I have a copy given to me from M$. That is somewhere around here. I also have 2 more copies that came with computers. I just format the Dells I got that came with XP Home... it was significantly faster when I put Pro on there as opposed to Home... and this is a brand new machine too.

I was having major hardware problems. My dual 1800's somehow morphed into a P4.

Not really, I'd had my fun with the dual 1800's & was tired of the lackluster memory & AGP performance. The P4 is faster for the majority of what I do, so while it is a step backwards in brute force it is better for what I need at the moment.

For the MS Virtual Machine (which is much less buggier than Sun's), do a search in Kazaa for "msjavx86.exe" (or Google-it). The file-size is 5191kb.

Well the Sun Java2 VM is significantly more capable than the MS VM. It's also currently optimized for server-side applications, and the load time is long. It's a one-time cost the first time any applet is loaded. Afterwards, the VM stays in memory. It's officially available for 3 platforms, but has been ported by manufacturers to *many* others.

So besides load time, the MS VM is not a competitive Java VM (there are even a few others out there). It's roughly 4 years old and stuck at Java 1.1.5.

The load time might be optimized for Java2 VM 1.5 but that remains to be seen.
