AAAH Got water all over my camera!!

I went camping yesterday/today and had to cross this stream of water. The camera was in my hand (SD600) and I stupidly slipped on the slippery ground and thus fully submerged the camera in the water for maybe a second.

I immediately took out the battery and sd card and left the little door open and left it to dry in the car. Should I open it and let it sit for a few days? Is there any hope for my camera? I haven't tried to turn it on yet. The lcd screen looks sorta messed up too. I'm scared.

just leave it by the heat vent in your house for a week or so then try it.

Disassemble it as much as possible and leave all the parts out to dry, maybe even by a fan if you have one. Your biggest problem will probably be the LCD, but you may have gotten lucky and the water didn't have enough time to cause a ton of damage.

If I remember correctly, past threads like this suggested putting the item in a bag of rice. Rice will absorb the moisture...

Ah, is there anything rice WON'T do?

Disassembling it as much as possible and leaving a fan to blow on it for a few days is probably the safest bet.

Last time I did somthing like this I yanked the battery & let the camera sit for a week on the back of my CRT where it was very warm with all the compartments open (of course withmost of the water out first) ... it dried out & actually survived fine.

Glad to hear that it survived. Has anyone ever opened up their camera before? I'm hesitant to open it up in the case that it's difficult to put it back together. That and I need to find someone that has a small enough screwdriver for the screws. As of now I'm just thinking of letting it sit behind my laptop.

35 minutes in pre-heated oven (min. 350 degrees), then let it rest in a ziploc filled with sand.

In my experience, it's the sand that kill it, not the water. The sand gets in the motor and destroys it.

someone just told me about soaking wet electronics in alcohol? anyone tried this?

It was definitely a good idea to take the battery out pronto; having the battery short circuit can screw the rest of the camera up pretty bad. Take it apart as much as you think you can and let it sit on a CRT or near a warm window or in your car (in sunlight of course) for a while, it'll probably be fine.

Alcohol is good for getting corrosion off PCBs.

Last summer I was thrown into the water with my camera in my pocket... it was completely submerged for a good minute or so... I took it completely apart and let it dry for a week. Put it back together and it's been working fine ever since.

Ooops, I see that you let it rest for a week and it works.
