If you're on the Atkins diet you can eat all the fat you want, just no carbs.

My suggestion? Get those Atkins shakes. All in all they're actually pretty tasty and they do fill you up.

Oh yes, chicken. Lots of chicken. And fish. And steak. Mmmmmmmm... meat.

But I'm NOT on the Atkins diet! I'm working out to get some muscle mass, not to lose weight...

Eat whatever you damned well please. Die early and fat, but not from starvation at least. :D

Lower your Carbs... that is all you need to know. I've lost 45-50lbs in 4 months on a mix of low fat and low carb (3 months of starving on a low fat and 1 month of low carb, which is MUCH easier). Fat is good for you to a certain extent.

Drink lots of water too.

I don't drink, but all these conflicting messages might cause me to start.

Thanks a lot, DanJ - I had a mouth full of water and almost spit it all over my screen

It's not even that funny...I just wasn't expecting it. :p

Then you want meat and fat. Protein is what you need for muscles, not carbs. If you work out you should put on some muscle while on the diet.

You're thinking about this the wrong way. It's not a diet....it's a diet and lifestyle change. :)

I eat 5+ times a day, workout, and am almost never hungry anymore.

Eat things high in fiber if you are still feeling hungry after eating, fiber + lots of water will make you feel full....just be sure to eat well balanced meals.

If you are looking to GAIN muscle mass, then eat anything and everything in sight. I mean, more that you think you can eat. Look at swimmers, all they do is eat (my roomie in college is/was one) and they are in amazing shape. If you work out like a mofo, then you can do whatever you want.

if you are looking to gain muscle mass and not put on any fat (which is much slower and more difficult mind you) then eat lots of protein and carbs, and just a little fat. Make sure you do cardio at least 3 times a week.

The only person who has said something in this thread worth reading. It's all about a lifestyle change, not a diet. Ask anyone who has lost weight and kept it off. They don't go back to eating pasta and pizza for every meal.

My rule of thumb is eat less more often. I eat between 5 and 6 times a day, two or three being a supp. shake. Others are a lean meat and veggie. Portion sizes never larger than your fist. I'm always full. I'm often saying to myself, "Jesus I'm eating again! And lost another 3 pounds this week."

So do what I do. Get plenty of exercise and just eat reasonably good stuff. I pretty much never worry about "am I getting too many carbs/fat/etc".

Sounds like you gotta learn how to do your homework. There are three types of macronutrients: proteins, fats and carbohydrates. An actual working diet can only be low on one of them, but not protein - so either low fat or low carb. A low everything diet is basically starvation, which isn't really a diet if you think about it. If you're trying to lose fat, go low carb and high fat/protein.

If you're looking to gain muscle, you should go read up in the forums at BodyBuilding.com. Here's a link to their post on beginning weightlifting. It covers diet during bulking (what you're trying to do) and cutting as well as excercise routines, etc... It's a VERY good post with much scrutiny from a large community of body builders.

Ignore 95% of the responses on here about how you should diet or work-out. This is a computer geek site, not a body building site. There's probably less than a 5% crossover. :)

Workout Basics from BB.com forums

Do yourself a favor and read that post, then do more research on your own. BB.com now has a work-out program database that you can search to pick a pre-defined workout routine based on a few parameters you set.

I think the best advice is to get off your fat ass and stop posting on ATOT.

the best diet depends on a lot of things. I don't recommend the 'Atkin's Diet' long term...it has been around a loooong time (I think pre-1900's even) and everytime it comes people end up staying on it too long and start dying.

The Atkin's diet relies on putting your body into ketosis....which is a bad thing really but great at shedding weight quickly. Most people are ruining their losses by 'cheating' and having carbs thus their bodies never enter ketosis and they end up gaining. To verify ketosis, urine strips are used by the most dedicated/strict dieters.

What I shoot for is around 30-40g of protein in a meal, then enough carbs (non-highly glycemic / enriched flours) along with about 10-20% fat (with as little saturated / highly hydrogenized fats as possible) to get my calories to where I need them to be.

I try to eat 5 times a day when I am in my mass building and 2 times a day with 1 added snack when I am losing.

Along with the proteins/carbs/fats you want to make sure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need, many over look this aspect. A simple multivitamin and a couple tums (calcium) goes a long way.
