Why on earth is it so hard for me to find a freaking job?! I've been looking for a job since september and I STILL haven't found anything. This is insane. I know more when it comes to computers then probably half of these rejects that have every certifiaction and degree known to man, and yet it's these same idiots that end up getting jobs before me. What the H*LL is up with that?! I've talked with some of these idiots that have their MCSE, A+, you-name-it certifications and let me tell you that some of these people are as dumb as a doorknob. Anyone that thinks that NT 4.0 NEVER EVER crashes, Windows 95 does not and can not support usb, and all you need is a printer capable of 150dpi to get photo quality pictures (just to name a few) should be labeled clinically insane, but instead they're thought of as computer geniuses because they have a fancy paper from Microsoft or whoever that bestows upon them the title of "Computer God". It seems as if all potential employers (at least the ones I've applied to) only seem to care about what kind of degree and how many certifications you have before they even begin to consider you for the position. How much sh*t you actually know doesn't even seem to matter nowadays. Apparently instead of "wasting" my money on computer upgrades I should have spent that money getting a certificate because then that would have made me smarter and then I would know how to fix computers. But as it stands right now I don't know my hard drive from my floppy drive so I'm not qualified to work on computers all because I lack a little piece of paper that says so.

Have you tried working with a head hunter or contracting firm? Good way to get experience and fill out the resume a bit, also if there are any rough edges in interviewing they can help.

yep, I've currently got 2 different job placement firms that I've been in steady contact with, and I've got all my friends looking out for me. I've hit up the local papers, local websites, and almost every online service I can think of (monster.com, hotjobs, carrerbuilder, msn, etc...) and I still haven't come up with anything. This is getting rediculous. I lost my job a few weeks ago so I'm living on my savings now and it's only going to last for so long before it runs out. And to make matters worse, until I find a job I can't buy any more computer parts!!!! You have no idea how much it's killing me to not be able to buy a 256mb PC133 dimm from crucial. Must....find....job......must....buy....more....memory :)

Not for nothing, but it's not for you to judge others that way. Also, do you have any experience? That plays a part in the hiring process as well. How old are you? Can you present yourself well?

All these play a part. People who have certification generally know at least the very basics (unless they are paper certs). Also, we are sort of entering/in a recession. Jobs aren't as easy to get nowadays.

Good luck to you.

tim0thy...

Obviously I wasn't referring to all certified people, I'd have to be a fool to make such a rash generalization. I was referring to all the paper certs. out there, plus it was a rant so I was trying to make a point. :)

The only "experience" I lack is the kind that looks good on the resume. You know, like "I worked for this company for so many years and I was their network admin/tech support/etc..." I have plenty of experience when it comes to dealing with computers when it comes to both home users, and in the business setting (I have a few uncles that have their own companies and I've fixed their computers quite a few times). You follow?

Obviously I've still got alot more to learn, but even with the "little" experience I've accumulated I should at least be able to land one measly little job.

If I've offended anyone that's certified out there I apologize, but I was just trying to blow off some steam. It's just real frustrating when you keep getting shot down at every single place you apply.

Half joking, half serious, I hope that's not the e-mail address you're putting on your resume!! That could explain it!

Nah, just be patient. If you're good you will get snapped up. It's only a matter of time. Just try to stay positive, and use a different e-mail address! AOL = No Respect.

Heh....no, that's not the e-mail address I use on my resume :D

I used to use freewwweb as the e-mail address for anandtech, but since freewwweb is now I gone I decided that I could either A) put down the address for my real isp (which I didn't want to do) or B) just keep the freewwweb address in my profile, but throw in a different address in my signature, so I chose option B.

Ahhh, OK... just makin' sure.

Keep your chin up. You will find something. It's a difficult time to find jobs (as compared to a year ago) but there are jobs out there--they're just harder to find. In the meantime, polish off your interviewing skills, and work on presenting yourself in the most positive way possible. Convince companies that they'd be crazy not to hire you!

Good luck!

Yeah I know I'll find something sooner or later, but it's just getting on my nerves that it's taking this long.

Oh well, since I'm unemployed and I've got all this time on my hands I've been spending alot of quality time with my dreamcast and my computer. It's a good thing I've got my video games or else I'd probably go crazy :)

I can understand how you feel though. Not that I'm complaining, but here I am in a job where I do nearly nothing. Sure, it's great, but too much of a good thing is bad right? C'mon, I used to watch cable TV and do nothing, maybe 15 minutes of work for the entire day.

I am looking for a new job now. (haha)

</ 0.5 rant>
In the last couple of months, I started studying for my certifications, and I take a little offense to what you've said because in some ways, I am a paper MCSE (+I as well!). My competencies aren't proven, but I feel as if I do have the knowledge to do the job.

Maybe I'm demanding for too much money...

doh! guess I stuck my foot in my mouth. Oh well, I guess that's what happens when you blow off steam huh? I'm assuming though that you at least know SOMETHING about computers or networking in general, right? 'Cause I knew someone who was a full blown MCSE and he DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO INSTALL A DRIVER!!!!! How stupid can you be to not know how to install a simple driver for a network card?!?! I also knew someone who had his A+ certification and this man was so stupid (when it came to computers) it was amazing. I actaully felt that just being around him and his stupidity actually made me a little dumber.

It's not that I'm saying that I'm a computer genius and that I know anything and everything there is to know about computers. In fact there's TONS of stuff that I have yet to learn, but if you met some of the people that I have then you'd understand where I'm coming from.

I should probably shut up before I stick my foot in my mouth again :)
