So basically, the cells were alive and feeding off his blood supply, but it couldn't be considered a whole alive being in and of itself or something?

Actually, it was an alien-human hybrid. The kid was infected while playing tic-tac-toe. Sigourney Weaver rises out of the ice and casts lightning Lvl. 1,000,000. The alien explodes into a fine bloody mist, because it was only a Lvl. 2 Druid. King Arthur congratulates her for destroying Dr. Robotnik's evil army of Robot Socialist Republics. The cold war ends. Reagan steals her accomplishments and makes like it was cause of him.

What happens is in the earliest stages of pregnancy, the zygote splits into what should develop into twins, but one winds up wrapping itself around the other, which eventually creates an umbilical connection to the "host" instead of the placenta. The host is breathing and pumping blood for the parasite, which develops into... something other than normal. In this case, it had started to develop limbs and a face, and it was clearly identifiable as human (sort of), but its brain cavity was empty.

They also had a woman in England who was pregnant with twins (separate), but one was living as a parasite off of the other, and had no heart or head. They terminated that one by simply cutting the parasite's umbilical connection.
