Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhh!!!!!! Modem problem

OK.
Win ME
ecs k7s5a
trendware v92pci internal modem

I am trying to replace a modem after it was killed ( found after a lightning storm ) this is the second time I have replaced a modem on this mobo for the same reason.

Have removed modem from control panel/ removed card - rebooted / tried updating drivers/ tested modem as good in another system/

win me sees it (as pci serial device and requests drivers - which I then install - OK

whenever I run the diagnostics it tells me the port (3 ) is already open.

Could I possibly have a motherboard problem ?

last time I had that problem I bought a $15 pci modem and my troubles were over, never could get that other one to work in any slot.

Have you tried going into the device manager, properties for the modem, one of the tabs has "advanced port settings" go into there and I believe you can specify a different COM port.

I can select any from 1 to 10 on windows 2000, I asuming that ME will give you as many options or at least the option to select COM4 (remember that COM1+3 and COM2+4 share an IRQ each, I think they still do anyway).

More than likely it is happening because Dial-Up (DUN) Networking is hosed.

You can try disabling RNAAPP (Remote Networking Access Application).
Press Crtl-Alt-Del and disable the service, then reboot.

Make sure you delete any old DUN Connections.
