aaaaah, My IBM 60GXP is making a HIGH pitch

I had a maxtor that once did this, a few years ago, but it did it from the start. I just turned the PC on and now my pretty new (3-4 months?) IBM 60GXP is making a horrid high pitched noise. After a few minutes it really gets to me... This ever happen to anyone else? Maybe IBM will replace it? It's performing perfectly fine though.

If it's really annoying you and you can live without this hard drive for a couple weeks, you should RMA it. Try moving the drive around in your case to see if the sound goes away.....

I just yanked a 75GXP (12 month old) that was doing the same thing.
It worked fine just annoying noise. It passed the IBM fitness test so I dont think I could get a RMA for it.

I replaced it with a Maxtor viper. HDtach went from approx 28000 to 34000 under XP.

I'd RMA it now because that little noise is just the beginning and you don't want it to progress to the point where you actually lose your data. These drives are pretty much all defective; the 75GXP and the 60GXP also, even though a lot of people like to argue that the 60GXP has normal RMA rates, which is ridiculous.:disgust:

I would try moving it in the case first, it may be possible it's some vibration or something like that, although that's not very likely. But it would still be worth a shot.

In any case, back up your data regularly until you figure it out. 🙂

My 60GXP did this a couple months ago (I wrote in the hardforum about this awful sound). I dunno why it did this, it didn't make it slower or any less reliable (YET). I just booted up one morning and it started to make this awful whining sound like ball bearings scraping against the metal.

I have tried:

Unmounting the drive, putting it on its side, on its back, mounting it looser, mounting it tighter, but nothing works. Its apparently something inside the drive and its making a loud noise.

In the last 2 months, it seems to have quieted, though it may be my imagination considering I have to hear it everyday. I may have just gotten used to it...

I had 75GXP and it stufffed. now i have a 60GXO...... and dame i hope it dosent stuff. Man last time i lost my assignment and it was due really soon. Bbut anyway, RMA are pretty good from IBM.

I think I'm just going to get another HD... can't stand this. I hear Maxtor makes a nice silent drive nowadays?

My 60GXP has been grinding lately, a tell tale sign from what I hear. Then, one day while my sister was using the PC it froze up, I restarted it, my BIOS reported "Imminent Failure Detected." I just bought a 40gb WD hard drive with Christmas gift certificates for the inevitable day my PC doesn't run because of the hard drive. I don't want to wait two weeks while IBM RMA's my drive.
