Stupid fvcking Excel. AutoRecover save my a$$. Went to lunch and came back. Someone had closed my spreadsheet and all my work today is gone. What good is autosave if it doesn't actually SAVE the work!

Probably not. It will likely have three characters (wrl, maybe) and some numbers.

well, i found it under the autorecover directory. It is the same version I'm looking at (pre-today). I guess as I sat here and cried, it autorecovered over the updated version.

*sigh*

You have any idea how hard it is to re-estimate a set of plans after you've highlight most everything because you'd already taken it off? It's MURDER.

Sorry bout that.

I work on people's computers here at work, and some people are too busy to have me work on it while they are there, so I wait until they go to lunch. If they don't leave me their password (they lock their workstations), I will just log in as administrator... which logs them off and doesn't save their data. :D

I've had that happen before. It really sucks. Sorry to hear it.

I make it a habit to save my work periodically because every now and then Windows will remind you that this is a good habit to get into.

I never understand why people don't save and save often.

Losing 15 minutes of work i can see, but was clicking the little disk icon or Control-S too much work to do in an ENTIRE day?

He just made the mistake of trusting Microsoft.

Learn to save your work to MORE THAN ONE FILE.

If you're working on one thing for 8 hours, take a couple of minutes to save as mysheet-draft1, mysheet-draft2, etc.

And walking off from your computer for more than a couple of minutes with an open, unsaved file is being awfully trusting, especially since you probably don't have a battery backup for your PC.

Also, do you have backups of your work off of that PC? Otherwise you'll be posting here week week asking "what is this freezer trick I hear about?"

Backups are your responsibility. Trust no one.

Autorecover has one use: to get your file back when either Office or your whole computer crash. If you (or a coworker) exit Excel and say DO NOT SAVE, then Excel does just that. Everything is erased as if you never worked on it. You are just misusing the Autorecover feature. Its hard to hear, but next time save your data before leaving your computer unattended.

that sucks...the person that closed your file would have been prompted is they wanted to save it or not ...so they should have at least saved it as another file..just in case

find them and beat them mercilessly

I wouldn't even leave a video game before saving it if I was going to lunch. I don't see why you would leave an excel file unsaved during lunch. Just about anything could happen during that period. A flicker in the power and everything is gone.

I usually DO periodically click on save every so often. I would have thought for sure that I had done so today, as I know how easy it is to lose things. Apparently I didn't do it today though, because I was looking at everything I had done at 7:30 AM.

Luckily, I have a good memory, and I've almost recreated everything I had. I had a few key measurements that I could use to recalculate a lot. And the other stuff I probably rememebred close enough.

Funny how it can take you less time to redo something...
