I know from past experience (somehow) that they are able to do some of the stuff for you that you'd have to do at a DMV if you didn't have AAA membership. I'm in CA. Can I get my Star driver's license done by AAA if I join?

I don't drive alot, most has been 1500 mi/year in the last 10 years or so. I could drive more, want to see some sights. I am in the Bay Area. My car's a 1997, but has <32,000 miles on it. Passes smog like a champ, AFAIK like a new car, but I'm not confident it's actually as functional as a new car! Some weird noises sometimes.

I figure if I go out on the open road, maybe best to have at least that free towing AAA membership gives me.

Info, insights, suggestions welcome... thanks!

Can't do the "real" id on line. Have to go in. Make an appointment, they're running 2 or 3 months out.

depends on when you last renewed your previous ID...at least by state, I guess.

I thought I was in that category...but I got my old MD licence in 2015, checked my list, said I needed appointment. then checked online...looks like I was on the cusp where they had all my bio info anyway (I had brought in my new, modern passport at that time in 2015, anyway, to act as everything to get my 2015 license, so maybe that is why?)

Turns out that I just had to pay $20 for a "lost license/renewal" and they mailed me the real ID within 2 weeks.

This was 3 months ago, with a 4 year-old license, issued before the law (I think).

This is good to know. I brought in a boatload of stuff including my birth certificate (I don't think I had my passport yet) not long before they instituted the Star ID. This was July 2017, so maybe, just maybe they won't make me come in to get the new Star ID. Gonna check this out now online, hope I can find out...

Edit: Their offices are closed today, so can't get anyone on the phone. Their online flowchart indicates I can board domestic flights fine until my driver's license expires, which is summer 2022. It encourages me to not apply now for Real ID but to wait until 2022. Not sure that's right, doesn't correspond with the info I've heard before. I guess I'll call them tomorrow.

Yeah makes sense since they have to examine your papers personally.

But 2-3 months out? That's terrible! :(

I walked in got in line and was done in like 20 minutes a few years ago when I "upgraded" mine.

What does AAA stand for anyways??
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm??
I know a guy who suffered that or something very similar. He barely survived and has been in a wheel chair ever since, around 20 years. That is when he's not in the hospital dealing with the skin issues associated with his condition.

Muse - schedule appt at the Gilroy or other outlying DMV - you should be able to get in within 2-3 weeks. Everything local was 3-months out.

Fill out your application online and bring in the application #.

FYI, your tires are most likely expired and need replaced if they are more than 5-7yrs old.

Bought my current tires at Costco in June 2007, so guess I should replace them. Car was at 19,000 odo reading then. So these tires have about 14,000 miles on them and are 12 years old.

BF Goodrich
Pro Series
Touring T/A
Treadware 500
Traction A
Temperature A
P195/65R14
Max load 560 Kg (1235 lb.)
Max Pressure 300 KPa (44 PSI)

Had my 30k service in June 2014, although the car wasn't quite at 30k yet (27,415). Did it at a well regarded indy shop. They inspected and tensioned the belts. Guess I should have them replaced too.
