I'm applying for credit cards soon and I came across a card that gives you free AAA membership benefits (link) I don't want it to be the reason I don't get approved for another card, though (too many apps to one lender).

Are there actually any benefits to having AAA? AFAIK, it's good for when you lock yourself out of the car. Is that it?

Before anyone asks, I AM NOT HAVING FINANCIAL PROBLEMS.

Umm, some hotels give you a discount rate, passport pictures are only 7 dollars....

Those are the only 2 times i've taken advantage of AAA.

Towing - lockout service - tire changing - trip planning - and a few others. Go take a look at their website. It tells you all the benefits.

It seemed like the towing distance was only 5 miles last time I looked at it. That really isn't enough!

7miles for classic membership. I have Plus membership with 100miles towing since I travel to Vegas/Sacramento frequently. AAA has gotten me out of many jams that I have had and used it for family/friends. I think AAA is worth every penny.

Classic Membership

With Classic Membership, you get 24-hour-a-day Roadside Assistance in any car, whether you're the driver or a passenger. You'll receive up to four free roadside assistance calls per member, each membership year, and your benefits include:

* Free tows from the point of disablement back to the contract station answering your call ? no matter how far away ? or up to seven miles from disablement to anywhere you choose.
* Battery jump starts, flat tire change, emergency fuel delivery, minor mechanical first aid, and vehicle lockout service.
* DMV Vehicle License and Registration services. Get your tags on the spot at any Auto Club office.
* Member discounts on travel and entertainment, car and truck rentals, at restaurants, hotels and motels, theme parks and attractions, and on goods and services at other participating businesses.
* Free domestic maps, auto trip routings, and AAA travel guides.
* Full-service AAA Travel Offices, offering special savings and benefits for members.

AAA Plus® Service

For just pennies a day more, you can enjoy the enhanced benefits of AAA Plus service. Additional Benefits include:

* Free towing up to 100 driving miles per disablement
* Free emergency fuel
* Up to $100 in vehicle locksmith services coverage
* Complimentary rental car-class upgrade (with in-state tow)
* Free international maps published by AAA
* 50% off the listed cover price for select European travel guides

AAA Premier® Service

AAA Premier is our highest level of member benefits and gives you added peace of mind beyond AAA Plus service.

* One tow up to 200 miles, and up to 100 miles on the remaining service calls
* One-Day Complimentary Rental Car (with in-state tow)
* Increased coverage up to $150 in vehicle locksmith services
* 24-hour Emergency Travel and Medical Assistance
* 24-hour Concierge Service
* Up to $1,500 Trip Interruption benefits

What do the plus and premium services cost? I only seem to be able to find the regular price...and then an option to upgrade (but it asks me to log in to my member account before it will proceed any further)

Not true! I just got my membership in, and I only get 3 miles of towing for free. The four free roadside assistance calls per member per year is disappointing. I didn't know that until after I signed up.

Maybe it's different where you live but I copied and pasted it straight from the site.

Pretty decent rates on auto loans through them. My car insurance is a bit cheaper b/c I go through AAA (discount is same price as AAA membership fee so I basically get a free membership.

Yeah. You are right. It's only for three miles of free towing where I live. Their website is different for different zip codes.

Damn that sucks. 3 miles is nothing. Not even far enough to get some McDonalds

I have AAA. Came in handy when my brake line blew and I had to get the car towed. Hard to drive the car to the shop with no brakes....

Most insurance companies have something similar for a few bucks a month. With Progressive I have 15 mile towing and roadside assistance. I've definitely got my money's worth from that. Once I locked the keys in the car (locksmith wanted $80 before I remembered insurance would take care of it).

DMV services alone pay for the membership. i don't know why i just don't want to renew my auto registration online, but today i just went to AAA, paid the fee, and they handed me my registration and my stickers.

but also nice is the notary service, passport photos (both for a small fee) and also travel services.

If yuo get AAA, get the Plus. The basic membership sucks when you break down, since they charge $2.50 a mile for anything over three miles.

I had NitroFill (http://www.nitrofill.com) done at a local dealership. Not only do I not have to worry about tire pressures, but for $40/yr you get a number of AAA-like benefits. Read the details at the website - I will be calling them about the road hazard coverage soon as I had a flat the other day.

Also my buddy with an Evo and the super-expensive Yokohama Advan tires says he went from 10K per set of tires and he's well past 15K on this set after having them filled with nitrogen. For what it's worth...
