Would anyone mind explaining the deal with AA & HDR? Do nVidia cards really have problems running AA & HDR at the same time? Does it affect all games or only a few select cases?

I've heard rumors of this and am wondering if it's true.

Thanks

My understanding, just from being exposed to feedback around the net, is that nVidia cards cannot do HDR and antialiasing, and that this is a hardware architecture issue. I'm pretty sure this applies to the 7 series as well.

To be more specific, they cannot do FP16 HDR + MSAA. They can do SS but the performance would be soo poor that it just wouldn't be worth it.

It's just the way the card is built. Can't change it.
They can do HDR+AA in the source engine (which is just glorified bloom according to some) since that uses pixel shaders to do the HDR.

And yea.
/thread (so thats theres not a million responses)

They can't do MS or SS antialiasing with that type of HDR, only the HDR used in the Source engine so far, and it's on the hardware level.

G80 will be able to do it though.

Only if the game does it at the software level and so far there's only one AFAIK.

Knock Knock
You know who's here???
It's WRONG INFORMATION!

They can do SS but the ask bfg said, only at the software level.
And AFAIK, AOE3 is the only one that does it and I hear the performance isn't the best.

Thanks for the responses! The Source engine based games are the only ones I've been playing lately so this won't affect me in that case.

it's worth pointing out that the x1900 series cards can do HDR+AA as well as G80 -- which is due out next week *(IIRC)

I thought the only game that the X1Ks could do AA+HDR was Oblivion through an unnoficial patch. :?

No, they really can do it. Other games with working HDR+AA are Farcry, SS2, AoE3, and maybe Chaos Theory, although I'm not sure about the last one.

*edit: plus it works in 3dmark06, fwiw.

Well, I'll just have to wait until G81 'til I can play those games with AA and HDR.
