AA & AF issues, Sapphire 4870HD

I've been using my 4870HD for over half a year now, always on max quality in Ati CCC (8xAA and 16xAF).

Without a change in software, hardware or (driver) settings I suddenly have quite some jaggies with 8xaa and 16xaf. Thought I accidently switched a setting, but couldn't find anything wrong. A few days ago it was all fine, and now without a reason some settings don't seem to have effect anymore.

I switched back to default settings and put everything back manually to my likings (max, hehe) but nothing changed.

I uninstalled the display driver + Ati CCC, used both driver cleaner pro and driver sweeper, downloaded and installed DD + CCC again, but it's still not what is used to be..

Next thing that came up in my mind was to try Ati Tray Tools, but it didn't change anything. I also downloaded the latest directx again but this didn't work too. I'm using CCC 9.2, and didn't had any issues with it until yesterday.

Does anyone has an idea what's going on?

Ps; it's not that the AA and AF are disabled completely, if I do that it looks way worse. It's just that the max settings don't seem to be max anymore.

I hope someone can help me out.

It's in every game I tested, I mainly play race sims.

I just tried to reinstall the 9.2 drivers and CCC again, making sure everything gets deleted with the cleaners but again no luck.

Can you provide some screenshots encompassing the jaggies you're seeing while 8xAA is enabled?

What type of AA is turned on? Box is the default, but that won't look as good as edge detect (with edge detect and 8x selected, you're effectively getting 24xAA).

I tried to put it all the way up to 24x, but I don't see any changes, looks exactly like 8x Box.

I will show some screens in a bit :)

Eh? Are you saying you've been running the same driver for the last six months? I find that hard to believe.

Ah, so you have changed your software (driver). In that case, try rolling back to the driver you were using when things worked.

No, I always have upgraded my drivers since then, up to 9.2 on release day. They were working fine for a week, and suddenly this issue came up.

I uninstalled 9.2 again and gave 9.1 a try, but no luck.

Then I did some more exploring and testing:

First I turned off AA completely, booted Race07, started a session -> looked as it should, many jaggies ofcourse.

I quitted, set the AA to 2x, booted Race07 again, started the session again -> looked better

I exit again, set the AA to 4x, booted Race07 again and started the session -> Looked the same as 2x.. hm strange.

Exit again, set AA to 8x, booted again -> still looked the same as 2x

I did this with 12x, 16x and 24x but it all looked the same as 2x.

Edit: forgot to say that my FPS do decrease the more AA I set.

Yes it has, called 'Full Scene Anti-Aliasing'. I can set it at level 1, 2 or 3, but it doesn't make any difference.

Kick.

I've put my issue on many boards, but no solution yet. Is a format the only thing I can do?

And this happens when Catalyst A.I. is disabled and the AA is forced through CCC?

Yes, well it happens no matter what settings the Catalyst AI is at, and not matter how I set the AA (CCC or game config).

So long as the game allows AA, disabling Catalyst A.I. and forcing it through the CCC should do it. When you do so, do you disable AA in the game's options?

Yes, I always used to disable it in the game options, and force it through CCC. Disabling AI doesn't has any effect.

Update:

Ok, I decided to format the whole thing and guess what.. Nothing changed.

Take a look at the screens, the first one is with 8xAA + Edge detect filter (in total 24xAA) + Adaptive AA and 16xAF. The second screen is with 4xAA + Box filter, without Adaptive AA and 16xAF.

Result = no difference.

Short distance looks ok, but the further you look, the worse it is (f.e. the shadow under the bilboard is split up and moves while I drive towards it)

those aren't jaggies.

I think you're referring to the screen door effect (forget what it is called) -- it pretty much can't be helped...
Sorry

Usually seen on fences, bleachers -- those sort of things

EDIT: Ok, I found it -- Moire Pattern

There are differences between them. The 24xCFAA pics have noticeably smoother edges on the light pole just to the right from the center of the pic. Against the sky its obvious.

That said, the pics aren't in the same position as everything is closer in the 24xCFAA shot. That and CFAA made all of the clouds disappear...
