A8V problem => random freezing and lock-ups ?!?!?

Hi all !

I *thought* my rig was now fine - specs as below:-

- A8V Rev 2.0
- 3200+ 939 @ 2.55gig @ 1.575v
- Beta BIOS 1009.004
- 2 x 512 Kingmax DDR500 @ Cas 3 @ 1:1 @ 2.8v
- 420w Topower Gold dual fan P/S
- CPU Temp at idle is 44'c in a warmish / humid room
- CPU Temp at full-artificial load when stress testing tops out and stays at 58'C
- using a Zalman 7000 AlCu in a crappy case

As I say, the system is prime95 stable / cpu burn stable / memtest stable - no errors etc ....... for many, many hours [ got bored after 18 hours and stopped stress testing ]

** BUT ** every now and then, I will be doing something simple like:-

- typing text into a document
- surfing the web
- doing a restart or shutdown

and the system freezes / hard-locks - no mouse, keyboard, hdd activity etc .... and I have to do a re-set etc....

This has got me beat.

Its not a beta bios 1009.004 issue beacue 1008 does it to.

There appears to be no-rhyme-or-reason-or-pattern to the freezes / lock-ups.

Anyone else have or seen this ?

Is there a fix or is it a potential BIOS issue ?

Any thoughts / help would be much appreciated.

Ben

Noticed on some other forums that 1009.005 is now out - will try that out soon.

In the meantime, from digging through google, it seems that the only actual / known working fix for this A8V random freezing / locking up problem is to me DISABLE the Yukon LAN in the BIOS and use a PCI-Lan card instead ?

Anyone here tried this or know if it actually IS the fix we are looking for ?

It **appears** to, but as the issue is random / hard to deliberatley duplicate, its hard to definetly say yes.

Was this bundled with the free wireless lan card? Mine would lock up randomly with the wireless card in(tried three different PCI slots) until I took it out.

Could this be my problem with the random locking up / freezing ?

Bear in mind that I have Kingmax DDR 500 Cas 3 memory.

I just ran Memtest 1.40 with my machine set at all default values ie: 3200+ @ 10 x 200 all default BIOS auto settings.

Memtest was fine - 60 mins - 2 passes - 0 errors.

I then upped the machine ot 250mhz htt and all other settings BIOS AUTO - ie: it is rated as DDR 500 o this should also be fine.

Ran Memetest 1.40 and I get MAJOR errors at Test 5 - each and every time at PAss %48 / Test %98 in Test 5 - I mean 80,000 errors - it srolls red wiht errors non-stop unitl I re-boot.

Is it possible that this is the cause of my randomn freezing / lockups ?

Sounds like you found your problem. I thought you had the same symptoms I have (same mb, same random freezing) but mine locks at stock speeds. :(

I also seem to get this problem with the random lock ups.

However, it seems to be only when overclocking. Seems like your memory is what is causing yours and probably same with me also.

I have Crucial Ballistix PC4000 which should in theory run at 250mhz at 2.5-3-3-8 no probs but mine don't seem to like it at all. It won't even do 2.5-4-4-10 or 3-3-3-10 or anythin i've tried uppin vdimm to max (2.8) but still get errors. It's been doin my head in tbh!

Does anyone know if the board has known issues with memory ? or have I just gotten unlucky with a crap pair of sticks....

Hello All,

I just joined this forum to throw an idea into the mix that may help out.

I can't speak to the memory timings but I did have the same problem with my A8V and the random locks and freezes in XP. Heck, I could not even get through an install of XP without getting lockups.

What fixed my computer up was putting the AGP Voltage to 1.6V instead of the default 1.5V.

I was talking to a tech at BFG about that problem because I thought it was my video card or something and she recommended the 1.6V on the AGP Voltage. Since then, I have not had one problem.

I am also using the onboard Yukon LAN without any problems.

Maybe this will help you out.

Asus A8V 2.0
AMD FX-55
BFG 6800 Ultra
SBLive Audigy 2
Antec 550W PS
Corsair XMS3200 @ 2-2-2-5-1T

Hi,

Me to have same lock-ups with the av8 deluxe wifi

My stuff:
amd3200+ 0.09
geil pc3200 2-2-5-2
club radeon9600xt
Enermax noisetaker 470W

At fist everything seemed to work fine. Then i overclocked my system. 230x10 1.4v 5:3ddr and 1.5v agp
and there was the first "no reason why" crash. I didn't give up, i tryed the agp voltage. 1.6v and everything worked perfect for 18h. I shut it down and went to bed... That was it. ever since i erased twice cmos, tryed a lot of different clocks and had no luck. I erased cmos for 3rd time and left it that way. But the lock-ups are still here. I even had a lock-up at the first minute...

Now i ll try the no wi-fi card thing....

-And back again. neither the wifi or the lowering of the HTT helped. Sound like i'm buying a Neo2......

I am also getting lock-ups and distorted screen displays on my brand new Asus A8V system.

My problems occur when quickly moving or resizing windows (especially IE window, for some reason, but even My Docs window). The window displays a garbled title bar, locks up/ freezes/ looses mouse control, blacks out, then refreshes itself. Once a window has done this little trick, it is much more likely to freeze again if I try to use the mouse on it.

On 3DMark03, it ran 6772 without freezing (being only semi-PC-literate, I don't even know if that is significant!), and seems to play videos o.k. I can only use the system by backing the Hardware Acceleration right off: Desktop>properties>settings>advanced>troubleshooting>hardware acceleration.

I thought it was a Video card issue with my Prolink 6600GT AGP, but since reading this forum I'm thinking its the MB?

- Asus A8V Deluxe Wi-Fi
- Athlon 64 3200+
- 160 GB Seagate SATA, on VIA Raid Controller
- 1 x 512 Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 DDR Ram
- Prolink Geforce6600GT AGP
- Antec Sonata with 380W TruePower PSU
- Win XP Home; SP2
- Trend Micro Internet Security

I have installed the following chipset and video card drivers.
- Bios 5.43.02.27.09 Revision 1008
- Hyperion 4-in-1 455v
- NVidia Display driver 66.93
