A8N-SLI Deluxe ethernet ports....

I brought my brand new, first build, computer to a friend's house to try to swap some files over and perhaps get some games in after linking them together...but it didn't turn out so well. I'm thinking it is a problem with my computer, as a different friend was able to link up and share files just fine. But now on to the problem:

First, at home, I got my broadband internet to work with the ethernet ports, so I was happy. Then I went to connect up with some friends and brought my Linksys router since we didn't have any null-modem/cross-over/whatever cables, just regular ethernet cables. When I plugged the cables into my ethernet ports it would detect it just fine and tell me whether or not the other one was empty and so on. However, when I went to "My network places" it showed absolutely nothing of my friend's computer. I tried setting up a network on my computer, even using a Windows XP cd to set it up for the other computer at the same time, but it had no effect. At the point where you select which ethernet program/driver/hardware you are going to use, I would hit next and it kept saying something to the effect of "There is still some hardware missing. Please make sure all hardware is connected and try again, or check the 'Ignore missing hardware' box." I'm pretty sure these ports are just ON the motherboard though, don't need an ethernet/network card, right? I loaded all the drivers from the CD that I got with my ASUS mobo, but it comes up with the same problem no matter what I do.

Again, I don't think the router or cables were bad, since another friend was able to hook up and could see everything just fine without setting up any networks or anything. I'm very confused and can't find anywhere that explains this error message (sorry I can't remember it exactly, couldn't log on at friend's house because I don't have a dial-up modem in my comp ;p).

Thanks for any help,
Aipon

it might be just an xp network neigherhood crap. the network wizard.

if you right click on network neigherhood and do search for computers
and search for your friends ip like

\\192.168.1.101 or whatever INTERNAL ip he is using.

or is it //

either way try both the \\xxx.xxx.xxx and the //xxx.xxx
i know its one or the other. that will work if its a network neigherhood issue.

Didn't try anything with that...didn't even know about it actually 🙂 But I'd like to say that they both also have Windows XP (both with SP2 also I think...) and they could connect. One only saw his computer in "My Network Places" but the other saw both computers.

As an afterthought, if anyone was worried for me, I eventually just pulled my hdd out and stuck it in my friend's comp and transferred everything, heh. Still want to get it fixed though since you can't play games like that ;p Also, I kind of wanted to hook my new pc up to my old one to transfer some settings and favorites and all that stuff. It took me quite a while to get the system set up how I wanted it after installing Windows XP, so I thought it would be nice to just transfer all those settings instead of trying to remember all of them 🙂

Thanks again,
Aipon

[EDIT]: Oh, another thing I tried was completely removing the Marvel Yukon ethernet driver so that it would show nVidia Network Manager during setup (just did it on a whim since my friend's computer had the nVidia one and mine didn't *shrug*.....still had no effect however)

Have been reading that a bunch of people RMA'd their boards when this happened....just wondering if ANY of the new boards worked. It now seems more like an XP SP2 problem with the drivers maybe
