a8n-sli chipset heatsink fan

hi guys.. im a newb here.

well my fan is not working, and i wnt to replace it with a zalman NB47J, but i have seen people saying that after removing the original heatsink and fan, their secondary ide stops working. is there a safe way to do the replacement? or something i shoulnt do to avoid that kind of failure?

i mean.. why did that happen? 🙁 i dont wanna brake mine
 
call asus RMA get the numbers from there website

and tell them that u need the new fan sent out

MUCH MUCH IMPROVEMENT

my temps are load at 38-39 same as before with the old heatsink

and that is with big time heat in my room since the temp outside is 25C

I haven't had this problem and I've tried the heat sink alone and with a fan. With the heat sink alone the idle is 34 degrees, very safe. Could be the other accounts broke a wire removing the heat sink.

Hmm, I replaced my fan with a Zalman NB47J however I don't use my IDE ports so I wouldn't know if the secondary one broke lol. SATA!!

I've seen several posts about that same problem with the Secondary IDE channel NOT working after removing the stock HSF but I've heard NO explanation as to WHY; it's perplexing !!! :disgust:
 
Apparently, the a8n-sli premium will have some sort of heatsink solution.
I thought the replacement fans (that only US customers seem to get) were supposed to be for the premium or did I misunderstand something?
 
They sent me one for my sli- dlx. I've yet to install it; the "heatsink" on it is minimal-hope fully a bit more quiet.

I received a replacement fan for my Asus A8N-SLI (NON-DELUXE) by calling that phone number mentioned many times in this thread.
 
What I meant is that the premium will be fanless, so where did the new fans come from? Were they specifically designed to fix the problem for the current a8n-sli (deluxe) ?

My chipset fan also died on me earlier today, its currently active and spinning at roughly half the typical RPM

I consider this an act of magic and don't question any further.

I called up the ASUS RMA number listed, and i should have a new fan here by the end of the week. Till then... Well, i went and grabbed the cheapest 40x40 fan they had on newegg, Its apparently noisy, but it should only be used for a few days. ($10 total is fine for another 5 days with a computer)

For now, I have it ghetto rigged to the extreme. I have my case on its side and an 80mm fan just sitting ontop of the excuse of a heatsink that came with the board. As I haven't gone SLI yet, there was still room.

I don't see this lasting that long and the heatsink is getting rather damn hot, so, i try to keep my computer on for only small bursts of time right now (about an hour?)

I've read this entire thread, and It seems that I'll stick with the new cooler that asus is sending.

Just out of curiosity, whats wrong with this Coolermaster design?

I'm thinking of moding my A8N-SLi and A8N-E with the Swiftech MCX-159-R, did you have to make any modifications to make it fit? Did you use the nF4 chipset fan header?

My replacement fan for my Asus A8N-SLI NON Deluxe (there are non-deluxe and deluxe versions of the A8N-SLI) came from:

Asus Computer International
44370 Nobel Drive

U.S.A.

I don't know what kind of service for the replacement fan is available for other countries but Asus shouldn't have ANY reason to give USA customers any special treatment !!!

You could always post at a European forum and see if anyone there knows a European number to call or call the USA number listed previously several times in this thread (I don't have it handy right now) and see if THEY can direct you to the number to call for a replacement fan in your part of the world.

Here is a few pics i took of the new fan and replacement of the old one.

I did it in these steps.. removed old fan (did it earlier)
Removed old heatsink, i pushed the tabs thru the back so that i could snip off the "hooks"
Removed Plastic Covering on rest of chip?? (didn't know wtf that was see pic)
Cleaned all the mounds of thermal paste they had on it with rubbing alcohol.
Applied a thin layer of thermal paste (not sure if it was required or not)
Placed new fan/heatsink at 45 degree angle and snapped in place (using same holes)
Plugged it in.

Not much of and improvement here, temps maybe only 1 degree cooler, and rpm is around 5000rpm instead of 8000rpm on the old one.

I came to an interesting conclusion.

Alright, as my sig says, I have an XFX 6800GT, and I have an audigy 2 ZS
What it doesnt state, is that I also have a PCI WiFi G card.

Anyway, The XFX 6800GT is in the top slot
a PCI exhaust fan immediately below it in the 1x slot.

Lan card is in the first PCI slot
Soundblaser Audigy 2 ZS is in the 2nd PCI slot.

In an attempt to cool down my northbridge fan, I realized that I have almost exactly 80mm of space inbetween the XFX videocard, and the audigy 2 ZS. Its at the point where I can put an 80mm fan ontop of the audigy 2(just sitting there) its side touching the WiFi card, and it fits perfectly in a position to blow air (or suck air) onto the northbridge fan chipset.

It's also completely inaudible.

Now, its sort of ghetto at the moment, but theres a good 5 or 6c loss of temp here. Sadly, this is going by asusprobe.
Before, my "motherboard" stayed at around 43c
after i did that, its staying at around 37c, and thats with the northbridge fan working at roughly 5-6000 rpm. (Asus has a replacement coming but...)

Now, i'm not planning on going SLI till late next year, that a good year of (probably constant) computer use.
I don't like the 80mm fan sitting directly ontop of the audigy 2 ZS, its obviously not that great of a setup. Likewise, when I move the case at all, it has a chance of falling down.

Now, is there any way to get the 80mm fan to stay in the same (or very similar) position? I'm thinking with an 80mm fan cooling it, that Zalman passive seems like a very good idea. So, I'd need to find a way to get the 80mm fan to stay above the Zalman cooler as well.
I LAN, quite a bit (every weekend) So, it has to be a very secure setup.

Any reason this wouldn't be logical or reasonable?
Any recommendatiions for an 80mm fan? I don't need speed control - but I do want blue LED.
Loudest fan in my case is the rocket cooler pro to my knowledge.

Great pics, ty,,nothing like a visual. I'll get around to replacing mine with the one Asus sent me; removing motherboard right now is just not fun.
 
OK, I Bjork'd something ('Bjork' - to cause a major problem in an attempt to fix a minor one). After replacing the original HSF with the new Asus one (Carefully, but not exceedingly carefully), the box hangs during memory test in POST (including asus voice report 'system fail memory test). Tried each stick individually as well as an old PC1600 stick (will that work?), but always the same. So, I assume I messed-up the MB when I was cleaning the old thermal pads off the NF4. I get a MSI Neo4 MB and move the CPU and memory to that. I notice in the MSI manual that they warn NF4 chipset can be ESD damaged rather easily and system won't boot. Sounds familiar, I'm hopeful... Same thing, hangs during POST at memory test, any memory configuration. Next logical suspect I assume is the memory controller, hence the CPU, but I am not so anxious to go buy a new A64 (yet) to test my theory. Is the CPU the most likely cause? Is there anything I might need to 'reset'? Any way I can narrow things down more without needing to swap in known-good components?

Yikes! Well i guess you could start by clearing cmos completely, set the jumper and remove the battery for a few mins, something like that.

Then i would flash with the current or latest bios, just in case. Also might want to check to see if all power cables are plugged in, ez-plug etc.. or maybe there is some other cable causing the problem?

I have been using the Zalman from day one on my Asus board, I installed it before I ever booted my system and I have had no problems, I have the new fan off the mobo in my retail box along with the replacement fan I had Asus send me.

Thanks for posting again. May I ask you a question since I don't want to weed through 22 pages, lol ???

Are you using JUST the Zalman NB47J (the blue one with the tall fins) WITHOUT any modifications such as the addition of a pabst fan or other fan to the Zalman heatsink?

How long has the Zalman been running in your system?

Has YOUR secondary IDE controller gone "dead" as some others have described AFTER removing the original HSF and replacing it with something else?

What do YOU think is the SAFEST way to REMOVE the ORIGINAL hsf ???

Can you get the new model of the fan anywhere from europe? I got A8N-SLI Deluxe and the chipset fan is starting to die. It doesn't always start on boot, which gives errors (and computer refuses to boot) and randomly stops while on use. It also started to make loud rattling noise.

I need help on this. Other option would be to replave the hsf with zalman, but i'm afraid to use passive cooling, since i'm not sure how good is my case airflow. I've also thought of installing Papst 412 -type of fan on top of the original heatsink, or attaching the papst to the zalman ZM-NB47J. Has anyone tried that kind of solution; zalman+papst (or any 40*40 mm fan)?

The e-mail included a pic of the old chipset fan and the new one. It looks like the new one attached at a 45 degree angle compared to the original. I will post the pic later tonight.

I asked if the new one was quieter and he replied, "Yes, very much so." I asked if I needed to RMA my board and he said "No, not unless your current board overheated due to the old chipset fan."

My replacement fan should be here next week.

do you have to pay anythink for send them the old fan back>?? and is it hard to put the new one in since i dont know much about takeing fans off

my chipset temp is 37C
cpu is amd 64 fx55 temp 40-60C

hmm, I live in the Netherlands too and the www.asus.nl website RMA links to China.

When I asked China about problems with the noisy fan I got the standard answer that this is normal and that a hispeed fan is required and that I should contact the motherboard dealer for service if there is a real problem with the fan. My supplier has not heard about these problems before, they have asked Asus in the netherlands, who also don't know about any problems with these motherboard fans...
They have asked Asus China about the RMA changing of fans in the USA, but no reply...

If I read all the stories about the fan here, I can not imagine that I am the only one in the Netherlands with problems ....

So very bad service by asus in europe....
