I have an a8n-sli with an opterion 170 running windowx xp, and i've been getting random lockups ever since i installed the opteron.

everything runs fine when stressed, but randomly it will lock up even when only browsing in IE. i've reinstalled windows, installed the latest drivers, and updated to the latest bios (1305 or something).

anyone have any ideas?

Same exact problem here i heard that maybe it could be that I should uninstall the processor driver's in window's tell me if this work's.

the processor and ram are overclocked, but:

1. memtest86 shows no errors within 24hours
2. processor (both) show no errors running prime95 on each core for 24+ hours
3. graphics card does not lock up when running 3dmark for 24+ hours

plus, it happens even when i'm at stock speeds...it's VERY random...

Thats what mine is doing too. I just installed it without the previous amd driver's installed thinking that would make the difference but it didn't change anything. Still just randomly crash's whenever I'm running program's. Put my old 3800 back in though and everything is just fine no problem's at all. So I don't think it's a mobo issue if my old cpu work's. What could it be everyone this driving me nut's. Guess my only option is to RMA it and try all over but it could do the same thing as last time so I'm not too hopefull at this point please help!!!!!

Oh sry forgot to mention what type of mobo I have. It's a MSI K8N-Neo4F and it say's it should support this type of opteron. So I had my processor rma'ed I will try the next one out and if it doesn't work I am screwed. Please keep me updated on your situation. And no I don't think I have the latest bios because I don't have a floopy. Would this make much of difference anyway's though since it say's on amd's site that it supports this chipset. Maybe we just got a bad batch of opteron's when did you get your's and from where?

I got mine from newegg around February, I think.

I've tried different bios and everything, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Other people seem to think that maybe it's the ram. i might try swapping my memory around and see what happens, maybe you should try too?

Ya I also heard it could be a memory problem aswell. I just rma'ed my opteron today so when I get my new one I will also swap out my crappy value kingston memory and put in my bro's patriot memory. What kinda memory do you have is it the cheap kind? Also did you uninstall you old processor driver's before installing the opteron? And you need to check out this thread this guy solved his problem by just getting a new one go figure!!!

I swapped out my 146 for a 170 a few months back. And even tho it is a drop in replacement and reboot. I found that a fresh install of windows was worth it. However your problem could be memory related.

i did a fresh installation of windows xp using the opteron 170. I have GEIL ddr 500 ram...and it's only running at ~464 mhz. I suppose some of the timings could be off, but memtest86 doesn't show any errors even when running for a day or more.
