a8n-e -- flashing bios..how to

i'm encountering some issues with my a8n-e board. it seems the frequent reboots are a known issue. i guess a good option is for me is to update the mobos bios? i've never done this before and wanted to take the necessary precautions so i don't mess anything up. is this just a simple program which i run and then computer reboots? my guess is no. i'm unable to find any step by step manuals via google. can anyone shed some light?

thanks fellas.

Which bios do you have now?

First you will want to make sure you have up to date chipset drivers (6.65 for 32 bit XP) and then go for the bios update. Some will say otherwise, but, for the past two years, unless unavailable on the board I'm working on, I've used the windows updater (Asus update 7.04 I believe), shut down all running apps and A/V software and updated in windows. Never a problem and I have 5 systems of my own I update whenever a new bios comes along for them.

hi there! sorry for the late reply. this is what i get from the registry

SystemBiosVersoin: Nvidia - 42302e31 Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
systemBIODate: 11/25/05

...is this the correct info, or would i need to get numbers from the bootup screen. if so, i need to find out how to do so, the last time i rebooted i was unable to see the numbers.

thanks alot!

Download from here

Latest BIOS (official 1011) and the ASUS Update program on the utility page.

The Asus Update will let you update your BIOS from within Windows. 🙂

Some people swear it's horribly risky, but I've done it 6 times now and never had a problem with it. 🙂

You've got the 1010 bios so you also must have the 6.65 chipset drivers. Easy way: Download Asus Update 7.04, install it, check your bios info to be sure, save your old bios with Asus Update, then just update the bios from the internet. OR..... download the bios file from Asus's website, put the image on a floppy and reboot to Award Flash (i think......as stated, i haven't flased from floppy in 2+ years but the option is on this board at boot i'm sure).

thanks for the fast replies guys.

really quick...what happens if i don't have a floppy on this new machine? (i did not put in the floppy drive)

If you flash from Windows, you don't need a floppy. Unless something goes horribly wrong (read: power goes out midflash, in which case you'd be screwed either way)

yeah, you don't need a floppy drive. just download the new bios, unzip it and leave it on your desktop (or wherever), and run asus update. when prompted, direct it to your newly unzipped bios version and that's it.

brutal. i tried to run the asus update utility and i get the following two pop up errors:

"NT service registry error! Please reboot NT and run again."

"No ASUS motherboard
Installation will be abooted now"

after a google search i tried to use the mobo cd to reinstall the chipset drives...no luck. anyone have any info on this issue?

i also tried to run that exe in safe mode but received the same behavior....wonder if anyone else had this issue

I am having the same problem as cesto.
i had used the updater before and it worked well, but recently it stopped, with the error giving by cesto. so i uninstalled it and now i can't re-install.

perhaps it was sometihng from windows update?

I just had the same, if you haven't got any floppy drive, just copy your NVIDEA nForce4 CD to harddisk or make image.
On the root directory are some files named: -A8N-E.BIN
-A8N-SLI.BIN
-A8NSLI-B.BIN

Download the newest BIOS from the internet and rename it corresponding to your Motherboard as above, after that you have to replace that file with the one you just copied(if you have made an image use Winiso).
At last, burn your copy to a cd and restart pc.
Immediatly press and hold <ALT> + <F2>
BIOS UPGRADE from cd will run with the new settings of your BIOS.

If You did everything right, you just updated your BIOS... ;P
