I'm looking to order my parts from newegg before Monday, so I'd like to get some opinions flowing before then (I'll be busy workin' to pay for it in the meantime and won't be around :-/):
It's either:
an Asus A7V333-raid with an Athlon XP 1800+ (maybe 1900+ or 2000+ oem) and 512MB Samsung PC2700...
or, a P4 1.6A Northwood for some overclockin' fun. damn these forums! this'd be an easy choice if it weren't so tempting...I already have an MSI GF4 Ti4400 and the extra speed most likely will help if I get a good overclock...similar cost either way, just more thrill/potential this way.
my needs are:
USB 2.0, ATA133, and getting that sucker to at least around 2.4 (just a setup that gives fair oc (with mem at good speeds) possibility, I know I can't take it for granted 100%)
usb2.0 could be swapped for firewire...or I COULD go for a firewire or usb 2.0 card (but that kind of eliminates the point of saving money and overclocking)
raid would be a nice thing (in many boards having raid is a way to add ata133 ...), bluetooth sounds fly (MSI 845E MAX2 but I don't know how I'd work with high mem speeds? )
good onboard LAN is a plus but not necessary.... PCI/AGP lock is good but not necessary if I can hit 2.4 without significant change to pci/agp speeds. I'd like to stick to an Intel or Via chipset if I can...
firewire is always cool (I'd have it with the Athlon XP setup) and maybe more important than USB 2.0. I plan on having this around for a while even if it isn't my primary rig when Doom 3 comes out.
Thanks for reading this lengthly opinion snatching post if you made it this far 🙂
post some kind of mobo recommendation if you choose 1.6A, I'd like to get some good memory speeds and am willing to put more budget into RAM if it looks like I have a nice shot...main prob is motherboard confusion with my usb2/ata133(and/or raid) for the 1.6
😕 must sleep now
