Hi, I got a brand new mobo, and now am having some problems. Hope some of you can help me with that.

1) First the BIOS settings --
what do i set primary vga bios to? pci or agp? (i have radeon ddr)
how do i disable the via southbridge ata controller and enable the promise one? (i tried plugging my drives to promise, and it detected them too, only that when booting it only gave me the option of floppy or scsi)
how/where do i set the boot sequence? in the boot menu?
anything else that i should know about the bios of this particular motherboard?

2) The system is doing weird things. Even though it is idle, every 10 seconds or so, the mouse cursor will change to indicate some activity. In the control panel/system/hardware devices if i click on the + next to anything, it will list the hardware items under it, but when the cursor shows some activity, it will reset it (close that submenu).

3) Under hardware devices again, my hard-drive (IBM 75GXP) is being detected as a Generic IDE disk. Is that alright? Or is it supposed to recognize it as an IBM. (I pushed in one of the pins on the back of the hard-drive while trying to connect the cable. Could that be the reason?)

3) I am getting this network error when windows loads -- error initializing protocol 0 or 1 or something to that effect. That would not let me get online. I have a Netgear FA311 TX 10/100 PCI ethernet card. Funny thing is that last time the computer was on, it suddenly went online, and the mouse stopped showing activity when there was none. Suddenly, it seemed everything was alright. But then after a little while, it just rebooted automatically (could it be because i was downloading one thing and installing another?). When I try to renew the IP address it says IP address conflict was detected.

4) The temperature of my CPU is too high. I have a Tbird 900 Mhz. (unoverclocked). The BIOS detects it at 49 degrees C, and the Asus Probe detects it at 59 degrees C. Which one is right? Either way, it was running at 40 degrees on my old K7TPro2-A without any thermal grease. When moving it to the new motherboard, I put some thermal grease on. Do you think it could be because I got some cheap thermal grease? Or could it be because I put too much on?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Oh, another thing. The hard-drive LED never turns on. What's up with that? Is it because I messed up my drive, or because I didn't hook it up right. The Asus motherboard manual is not very clear about where to hook up the drive LED. I figured must be next to the power LED where it says IDE LED. But that doesn't seem to help.

Hey there. Although I will help you to the best of my knowlege....well...here it goes:

1.Set it to your primary video adapter. I belive your Radeon DDR is AGP, so set that option to AGP.

2.I dunno. Check your programs that are currently running. Also, update your BIOS to the newest available at the GERMAN website (German site is updated daily) ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/

3.Yes, that is normal. Any HDD should be recognized as "Generic IDE Disk Type 47" If it is operating, you did nothing to the HDD to harm it.

4.Did the drivers install correctly? If not, reinstall them. Are you using broadband of some sort? Also, if you are using a cable modem, your IP will be set by your ISP. DO NOT CHANGE THIS!

5.The CPU Temp in the BIOS is the correct one. The version of the Asus Probe has some errors programmed in it when it communicates with the BIOS to find the real temp. The average difference between the temp in the BIOS and in the Probe is 10C. Your temps are within reason, but I suggest that you put Arctic Silver on there anyways. Asus boards tend to show higher temps than others. That is normal. You have to callibrate it...not sure how to do that...ask Mikewarrior2. He will know.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Oh yeah. Reverse the pins that connect the HDD LED on the motherboard. You may have them backwards or in the incorrect location.

Ive got the same board.

1. AGP
2. No Idea, I dont have this problem. You should let me know what equipment/software you've got and just how its set up. Maybe that will tell us something.
3. Are you using the 4 in 1 drivers or the drivers that came with Windows ?Which version of Windows are you using ?
4. Make sure the network card is in Slot 3. Its the only one that is not shared. Most NIC's do not like sharing.
5. My temps are 39-41c depending on if the case is open or not. It runs about 42-43 after an hour of MDK2. The ASUS pc probe is junk. The BIOS reflects the correct temperature. Again, you did not give us good info about your hardware. My guess is that either your heatsink/fan sucks or you've used way too much thermal grease.

Email Me If I Can Help You More.

Some more comments for ya:
If you installed VIA 4.28 Bmide driver (included with the 4.28) and Via Inf the HDs should be recognized by name. Not a big deal though since generic means its is using Windows driver, The only problem with windows drivers is that it MAY not recognize ATA66 or ATA100.
Also this is how my setup is on the A7V:
BIOS -- disable COM1, COM2 and LPT also onboard sound and modem even though they are not present.
PCI IRQs are
1 = 11, 2=3, 3=10 and 4=7 and PNP OS set to NO.
PCI slot 1 - empty
PCI slot 2 - ATI TV Tuner Card
PCI slot 3 - SBLIVE! needs its own unshared IRQ
PCI slot 4 - NIC (shared with 5).
PCI slot 5 - empty.
Good luck.

The SBLive! will share an IRQ just fine. Actually, its a bit of a hog and likes 2 irq's. You may have to reserve IRQ 5 for legacy support in the bios to get it to work. But, then again, if you dont need dos support it may not matter.

On my A7v133 it would only work in one cofiguration. This is because my 3com NIC refuses to share an IRQ with any other device. Thus, it had to be installed in slot 3. If yours will share and you can put the Live! in slot 3 (unshared) then great.

If not, you'll be forced to put the Live! in another slot. Contrary to popular opinion the Live! can share, and so will the Promise controller. My live had to go into slot 2 and share with the promise. My system is stable as a rock.

Good Luck
