A7V133 Northbridge and CPU fan questions

Has anyone taken the stock hsf off the a7v133 northbridge and applied some thermal compound on it? The screws are plastic and i was wondering if theres anyway to reuse those without breaking it. also my cpu, i have a fan on top blowing down on it and i was thinking about putting a fan on the side to blowing into it from the side. will the 2 fans interfere with each other and end up making cooling worse? thanks for any input.

It's easy to take off the northbridge fan w/o breaking the clips. From the back-side of the motherboard, squeeze the clip together (gently with pliers if you need 'em) and pull it out. To put it back it, you just push it back in the hole. Simple.

As for adding an extra fan to ur CPU's hs, just try it urself. See what happens.

Whoa, wait a second. If you're looking at the underside of the mobo, you pull the pins out? I unmounted my motherboard one day (ugh) to pop off the HSF and add some Arctic Silver but couldn't figure out how to remove the pins. Since the area I had to compress was so close to the PCB, I couldn't push the pin through because I had pliers right next to the PCB. I wasn't (and still am not) willing to break the pins because I'm not sure how to replace them.

Anyhow, I've been running my system without a fan at all with no problems (albeit only at 100 MHz FSB).

/me thinks it best to leave that lil cooler alone unless you are already getting high temps off of it...why take a chance on scratchin the pcb while compressing the plastic screw tips?...granted I had no problem doing this with my geforce 2mx..but hey it only cost me $80 and I have plenty of other cards laying around...just my 2 cents

One good reason to at least check under the NorthBridge HSF is that some do not have any thermal compound on them at all. My primary A7V133 had none, but the one I use for a test board did. (It was just a blob, and not spread evenly) It is especially important if one plans on really raising the FSB.

I just use my fingernails to squeeze the pins together in the back of the board, no pliers. The IWill KK266 is another good example of a board that usually has no thermal compound under the Northbridge HS.

i'm gonna try the northbridge now. the 2nd fan i added to the cpu heatsink isn't helping the CPU temps at all. I think i'm going to buy a 80MM fan and mount it.

well that was just the biggest waste of time. My northbridge temps are the same as before i applyed heatsink compound to it. the heatsink was pretty loose and basically had no preasure at all on the chip itself. that was just a waste of time. :\ oh well.
