Picture of board Not my board, but one similiar to it.

The capacitor that I broke off accidentally while installing a second hard drive in a cramped case (I know, probably should have taken the board out  )

The capacitor that I'm talking about is the one seen just above the CPU fan right next to the DIMM slots.

This broke off and my attempts to put it back on have been... unsuccessful.

The board does boot into Windows XP just fine, and without a BSOD. Oddly... quicker than it used to -_^

The computer was promptly turned off due to the possibility of injuring the other hardware.

Is this broken capacitor cause for concern?

It's actually a salvaged HP version of the Asus A7V-VM board from an older computer.

Black cylinder = capacitor.

The large caps are power filters and reservoirs of quick power for very short bursts. I wouldn't let it go.
. Any competent electronics or computer shop should be able to tack that thing back on there unless you physically damaged the cap leads or housing so there is noting left to work with.
And it shouldn't cost you much. If you did physically damage the cap, you can buy a new one at any good electronics shop. But you do want a good fast replacement hopefully Panasonic or Nichicon brand.
That shouldn't cost a lot either.
