A7V & Promise ATA100 BOOT Delay Under Win98....

Any suggestions to prevent or minimise
the time it takes for the Promise ATA Driver to be loaded under win98 ?

If I remove the ATA-100 Driver under win98,
the problem with the delay vanishes.

For all A7V users with ATA100 Drives, how did you set up your drives & pheriperals ? How long does it take for you to boot to Windows ?

----------------------------

Asus A7V 1.02 with 1004a Bios
Using latest Via 4-in-1 & Promise ATA100 Drivers

ATA Primary : IBM ATA100 75GXP- 15GB
ATA Secondary : None

IDE Primary : Asus 50X CDROM Drive
IDE SECondary : None

Bootup Sequence :
1. IBM ATA100
2. CDROM Drive
3. Floppy Drive
4. IDE (none)

Nothing easier then that ;-)

Go to my page at

http://members.tripod.de/Juggernaut/

and download the new Driver for the A7V ATA 100 Device. This will solve the delay while booting. The driver has been posted on Usenet.

Try the 1003 bios without the ata100 bios part, too. If you dont boot from your ata100 controler, this will decrease boot time without having to use the 1004 bios (which increases temperature significantly by not letting the CPU idle)

Hope that helps :)

Andreas,

Thanks you, it does seems to cut the boot time dramatically.
Previously it took aprox~77 Sec for that segment.
Now, its down to something like 14 Sec.

Is there any other issues related to using this driver ?
Like crippled performance or anything like that you encountered?
You mentioned in your website it'll take more HD space ...what exactly
do you mean. Can you pls eleborate it further ?

Appretiate you help !

Promise has beta drivers that fix it, I just got then off the link at http:\\www.insanehardware.com

I use winMe and the delay is nonexistant now. I just went to My COmputer, Device manager, went to promise driver and did the update driver. Worked like a champ

Sorry, I was a bit unclar with the hdd space.

What i meant was : I cannot guarantee for anything.

The thing with the driver taking hdd space didnt mean its taking MORE space trhen other drivers, it was simply that : The only thing I guarantee is that the driver will fill some space on your hdd - well as much space as it's size is. 246KB that is.

And no, at least I haven't noticed any issued ... yet.

David Hood : Yep, these are the same drivers ... except that insanehardware did not have them until yesterday ;-)

Thanks Guys ,

The patch couldn't come at a better time ...
I was about to disable the ATA100 channel & mount the HDD to the IDE channel.

Now I'm using the so called "Promise beta driver" under Asus A7V Bios Ver 1004a.
Hope ASUS will refine this driver further & release it officially ...

Seems to have no problems here.
But if something crops up,
pls post them under this thread.

Juggernaut,
The modified Bios(1003a) you were saying should be for people who are'nt using any devices on thier ATA100 channel & wants to disable them right? Why do you think they should use them in place of 1004A ? Since the new BIOS also allows them to disable the ATA100 channel also .....

The Bios(1004a) not letting the CPU idle.....does it contribute to the temperature of the CPU ? Meaning, by using the 1003a does your CPU actually runs any cooler ?

Thanks.

The modified 1003 does the same as setting ata100 to disabled in the setup of 1004.

and NO i didn't say "for people who aren't using any devices on their ATA100 channel & wants to disable them " but "for people who dont want to boot from the ata100 controler".

When disabling in 1004 (or when using the medified 1003) you only disable the controllers bios. The controller keeps on working ... theres no way yet to completely disable it. It only stops searching for devices after POST, so you cannot boot from it.

1003 vs. 1004 temperature :

I am investigating into this right now. Today i got meself a industrial temperature probe. I dont want to rely on the onboard sensor. I'll keep you updated, just look for a new post by me in the next hours.

Bye
