I just got a 120GB Maxtor SATA drive and installed windows XP on it. Most of the time it works great, but every few hours it does a strange hanging routine. I first noticed it playing TRON 2.0, and it's making progress in the game somewhat annoying.
When I'm playing Tron sometimes my hdd will start going nuts and the game will stop moving for about 15 seconds (though the music keeps playing just fine). Usually I am able to continue playing the game after the "thrashing" finishes. Also, sometimes my computer will just totally freeze up - often a few minutes after the thrashing problem. I wasn't running anything significant in the background.
This has also happened when I haven't been playing anything, just downloading stuff on bittorrent.
It's not coo at all. The odd possibility here is that I've still got some kind of worm/spyware/virus that I contracted when I was trying to find a nocd patch for tron but I thought I'd removed it all. The symptoms for that were that I was running a process called "pup" that seemed to be linked to an exe that was just a bunch of numbers (hiding out in my system32 directory). I deleted all the random number exe and a couple of random number dlls too, but the problem has persisted.
I've pretty much ruled out a power shortage. I've flashed my bios, updated my drivers, etc. Running on an a7n8x deluxe board. Any suggestions would be much appreciated =)
